Procedure
1. Lead-in (5 minutes)
Open Class: Begin with an attention-grabbing picture of one person picking his
nose and the other person finding it unpleasant. Introduce the expression “pet
peeve”. Invite a few to share what their pet peeves are.
Introduction: Explain that today they will be engaging themselves in a reading
and writing activity on the topic of “pet peeves”.

2. Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

Flash the question asking for the main idea. Then display the paragraph for not
exceeding three minutes. Show the question again. Discuss the answer, and ask
them how they have managed to reach the main idea (skimming).

Display a question looking for a specific piece of information in the text. Then
display the paragraph for not exceeding three minutes. Show the question again.
Ask them how they have managed to find the answer (scanning).

3. Guided Practice

CompreQuest (15 minutes)

Set the class into groups of 5 members. Explain that all the groups will have to
write their answer to the reading comprehension questions within the set time
frame (2 minutes max for each question). The students will have access to the
paragraph they need to work on by scanning the QR code. A total of five
questions will be flashed on the screen, with one question and the choices
popping up at a time. They write down their answers on the distributed mini-
boards. Points are awarded to liven up the class atmosphere. The teacher
encourages the students to share their justifications for the answers.

Rant it out (15 minutes)

Each group is provided with easel paper. Each group member shares one pet
peeve. Each group comes up with a compilation of their members’ pet peeves
(Encourage students to write in full sentences instead of sentence fragments).

4. Assessment (15 minutes)

Each group presents their members’ pet peeves to the whole class. Encourage
the other groups to comment on the pet peeves presented to make the
discussion alive.

5. Wrap-up
Quick recap: Ask the class what their takeaway for the lesson is and also
highlight how one can be mindful of their behaviour so as to render the
classroom more liveable.
