QUESTION ONE (24 MARKS)

a) Identify and briefly explain the devices used in layer one and two of the OSI reference
model. [6 marks]
b) What is the difference between Frequency Division Multiple Access(FDMA) and Time
Division Multiple Access(TDMA) [4 marks]
c) A network has the following requirements:
Department No of Hosts per subnet
A 71
B 49
C 55
D 27
E 12

Assume that you are the administrator, and you have chosen the 192.168.1.0 for network
addressing:
i. Write an addressing table to depict the above scenario [6 marks]
ii. Sketch a basic topology showing how your departments would appear: use one
router for the whole network then, one switch and one PC for each subnet. Show
the assigned IPs on your sketch. [6 marks]
d) Explain any two benefits of IPv6 over IPv4. [2 marks]

QUESTION Two (12 MARKS)

a) Sketch the diagram above on your answer sheet and circle all the subnets [4 marks]
b) Calculate the usable host addresses suitable for sales [2 marks]
c) From your answer in (ii) above what would be the custom subnet mask, given the
default subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 [2 marks]
d) Write the prefix notation for your answer in (iii) above [2 marks]
e) Explain the function of the following network troubleshooting commands [2 marks]
i) Ping
ii) Ipconfig

QUESTION Three (12 MARKS)

a) With respect to how data travels across a network, differentiate between the following
terms: [6 marks]
i) ARP Cache and MAC address Table
ii) Layer 2 Header and Layer 3 header
iii) Unicast Frame and Broadcast Frame
b) Describe the three actions performed by a switch in its role of transmitting data within a
network [6 marks]
QUESTION Four (12 MARKS)
a) Differentiate between peer-to-peer and client/server architectures. Include sketches to
support your answers [2 marks]
b) Consider the class-less IP network 130.45.130.0/20
i) How many bits are in the net id? [2 marks]
ii) How many bits are in the host id [2 marks]
iii) How many possible hosts are there [2 marks]
iv) What is the subnet mask in binary and dotted decimal [4 marks]

QUESTION Five (12 MARKS)

a) Consider the diagram below that shows an IP network with four hosts and a switch. The
IP address the shortened MAC address for each host are indicated alongside each host.

Map out the sequence of event for a frame to move from Host A to Host D and the response.
Show the MAC address Table mapping for by the end of this communication [8 marks]

b) In your own words, how would you define a computer crime? Briefly describe one real
life example that you have witnessed/experienced [4 marks]

QUESTION Six (12 MARKS)

a) In context of data communication differentiate between the following terms:
i) Bipolar signal and polar signal. Include simple diagrams of to help you
illustrate your answer. [4 marks]

encoded using: [ 8 marks]
i) Return to Zero (RZ)
ii) NRZ-L
iii) AMI
