WELFARE DEVELOPMENTALISM - RICHARD TITMUSS
The Four Asian Tigers= Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.
experienced rapid industrialization and high growth rates from the
1960s to the 1990s.
Economic Crash
The 1997 Asian Financial Crisis significantly impacted these economies.
South Korea, Indonesia, and Thailand were the most affected, with stock markets
and currencies crashing.
Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan were less affected but still experienced
economic downturns.
Current Status
Today, the Four Asian Tigers are high-income economies. They have diversified
their economies and are leaders in various sectors:
Hong Kong and Singapore are prominent international financial centers.
South Korea is a major global arms manufacturer and a leader in electronics.
Taiwan is known for its advanced manufacturing, especially in semiconductors.

SOCIAL INVESTMENT & DEVELOPMENT STUDIES
Sen (1999) & Nussbaum (2011) - Capability Enhancement
Amartya Sen (1999):
Core Concept: Sen's Capability Approach focuses on what individuals are able
to do and be, i.e., their "capabilities." It emphasizes the importance of freedom
and opportunities for people to lead lives they value.
Key Contributions: Sen introduced the idea of evaluating development by
considering people's capabilities rather than just economic growth or income
levels. He argued that development should be seen as a process of expanding
people's freedoms and choices
Applications: The Capability Approach has been widely used in human
development reports and policies, influencing global development agendas
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT by Midgely, J. (2014)
CAPABILITIES
Martha Nussbaum (2011):
Core Concept: Nussbaum expanded on Sen's ideas, proposing a list of
central human capabilities that should be guaranteed to all individuals
to ensure a life of dignity.
Key Contributions: Nussbaum's work provided a more detailed
framework for assessing human development, focusing on specific
capabilities such as life, bodily health, bodily integrity, and control over
one's environment.
Applications: Her approach has been influential in discussions of human
rights, gender justice, and social policy
