MECHANICAL CORE (R&D) SUMMER
INTERNSHIPS

1
Why choose the profile??
R&D is all about building new technologies or improving
existing systems—perfect if you're excited by design,
prototyping, or problem-solving.

Interning in R&D means you'll use and strengthen your core

subjects—thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials, CAD,
FEA, etc.great chance to apply classroom theory to real-world
problems.
Trying out R&D helps you figure out if you enjoy research-
oriented work or would prefer more hands-on industrial roles
later.
Which companies offer the role?

R&D is mainly offered as a role in core companies like Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd,
Jaguar Land Rover(JLR),Bajaj ,OLA.

3
Areas to Focus on
Aim for at least 7.5+cpi. For people having low cpi can target companies off-campus
through online apps like UNSTOP as many companies conduct their intern recruitment
through them.
Brush up on your core courses such as Thermodynamics, Fluid mechanics, Solid
Mechanics, and Engineering design.
Master your introduction, prepare for common HR questions, and conduct basic
research on the company you're interviewing with, as it's crucial.
Any project related to core should be mentioned but you should have a good
understanding of it as interviewers tend to ask a lot of questions from the core
projects.
Lastly, one should mention Position of Responsiblilites (PORs) [if the POR is related to
any SNT club or teams , it would be much better. Other PORs can also be helpful during
HR questions.

4
Major courses to focus on:
ME231: Fluid Mechanics
ESO202:Mechanics of Solids
ESO201:Thermodynamics
ME222: Nature & Properties of Material
ME252 : Theory of Machine and Mechanisms
ME261 : Manufacturing Process
ME209 : Dynamics

Practice Problems:

DR Reddy’s Selection Procedure
There are 2 types of selection procedure in
Dr Reddy:
Online Procedure:
Competition are held online on Unstop consisting of 3 rounds .
1st round consists of multiple choice questionsTop 50 rounds
move on to the next round.
2nd round consists of case-solving ppt submission . Top 10
rounds move on to the next round.
3rd round consists of final presentation . All participants o this
round get the chance for the interview help in their
headquarters at Hyderabad . Most students reaching this
round get selected for the intern .
Link:https://unstop.com/competitions/destination-dr-reddys-
dr-reddys-laboratories-limited-1064416

Campus Procedure:
Preliminary Test → GD (technical) → Technical + HR round
6
General Tips
Try to find projects under Mechanical or Electrical professors . Would be
helpful for resume.
Include all core courses in your resume and for companies like JLR and
Bajaj , revise the concepts of motors and generators from ESC201
JLR focuses on basic coding questions too so brush up your ESC skills.
Remember if you include any core projects(mainly Surge) or POR(mostly
Snt team based work), most of your interview would be based on them and
if you don’t have them your interview would mostly based on courses
mentioned on your resume
Resumes build a first hand impression .Ask your seniors for feedback.

Resume Pro tips
• Non-negotiable: CPI - 7+ for Nestle and 7.5+ for ITC (Safe to hover around 8+)
• Core Projects (like those under ME, CHE, AE profs or AME projects) will be preferred
• Include as many numbers as possible, when you write the projects
• Add atleast 6 relevant courses which are applicable for the role (SPECIFIED LATER)
• Highlight the impact created using your PoR
• Avoid explicitly mentioning your technical skills in a box
• Show them in your projects.
• Maintain a priority order of research internships over any project
• Attach Github repo/ Drive link of each projects.
How to Prepare ?
• Prepare your Resume like a Boss ! Learn to explain your projects elegantly.
• Several questions will be from ME 3rd and 4th Sem Courses namely
1. ESO 201 (Thermodynamics)
2. ESO202 (Solid Mechanics) and ME222 ( Nature of Materials)
3. ME231 (Fluid Dynamics)
4. ME261 (Primary Manufacturing Processes)
5. ME341 (6th Sem Course but useful)
Revise Notes of these courses and learn derivations of important theorems.
• To brush up your aptitude skills, solve as many online Aptitude Test of various
companies as possible. I rigorously solved Capgemini Aptitude Test questions before
the ITC test and they were extremely similar.
How to Prepare ?
• For GD, gather a group of friends and conduct as many mock GDs as possible with
past year questions. Remember to speak only logical stuff while maintaining the flow
of discussion.
• Your Intro is the Key - Prepare a captivating Intro encompassing your details,
Summary of projects, Key skills, Key interests and future goals.
• Explain your PoR as if you owned it - the impact you created using the PoR will largely
decide how fit you are for the “MANAGERIAL” part
• RESUME - Review it with as many seniors & friends as possible and incorporate all the
relevant feedback. Figure out what questions can be framed on each section.
• MOCK INTERVIEWS - When close to the onset of the season, begin giving mock
interviews to friends and seniors (or even take interviews) and collate feedback for
your improvement.

One common mistake is dont think you wll complete all the theoretical part and
then start with practicing questions, do them hand in hand
Find someone you can discuss solutions with
Once comfortable you can skip questions by reading their solutions to save
time

Some general tips
Finance can be covered by some basic videos on youtube
Talk to seniors who have interned in the company you have interview for
Don't leave resume making to the last, get it verified by as many seniors you
can
Set weekly targets for yourself to achieve
Do something else too such as project, SURGE etc with intern prep
Prepare a short intro before hand highlighting your interests and experiences
dont make it looked learned but dont stutter, dont make it too long
Before going in for the interview see the companies values etc given on their
website
Don’t fret over shortlistings

Interview Tips
Resume: Know your resume A to Z; every project, its tech stack, the
learnings, bugs faced, bug solution.

SQL/DBMS and OOPS: Can be prepared even after shortlisting but

recommended you get the basic beforehand.

Puzzles: Brainstellar is a must (atleast all easy+medium). Pretend

you are thinking it out even if you know the answer.

HR Questions: Prepare the standard HR questions beforehand.

Answer as diplomatically as possible.
General Process
1. Open Assessment: 2-3 coding questions, some companies
put reasoning questions, (tress, linked list favorites)

2. Resume Shortlisting: Projects and Certifications (although

not much weightage)

3. Interviews: 1 or 2 rounds - Problem solving, project

discussion, puzzles, SQL or OOPS and HR Questions.
My experience
1. Open Assessment: 3 OA questions, were little tougher than
normal, I didn’t have the perfect score.

2. Interview Round 1: 2 questions: 1 was object hierarchy

design; 1 simple puzzle, 2 moderate SQL questions,
strength/weakness question

3. Interview Round 2: Felt more like a discussion, went deep

into concepts like garbage collection, exception handling,
discussed a project, and some more HR questions.

Field Engineer (Oil and Gas)
What is SLB?
● SLB/Schlumberger is the world’s leading oil-field service provider and has been
operating in India for over 70 years.

● During the Y22 placement drive it hired interns for the role titled, ‘Field Engineer
Trainee’.

● A Field Engineer essentially helps in the operating of an oil rig i.e. managing the
drilling, maintenance and operations.
How to Prepare
Prerequisites-

● No Branch Preference
● No CPI criteria ( unofficially 6.5+, though having a decent CPI can help)
● Resume is very important. Use your consult or techno-managerial resume
which highlights PoRs and projects.

● There is no specific way to prepare for an internship with SLB since no

technical questions are asked at any point. Confidence is key when it
comes to securing an Internship with SLB.
SLB Selection Procedure

1. Resume Screening - more importance was seen to be given to PoRs as

compared to CPI
2. Pre-Placement-Talk - Very Important to attend. (wear semi-formal
clothes)
3. Group Discussion- A completely random topic will be given and judging is
based on how well one puts across their point. Attend AnC sessions and
use youtube videos to prepare for the GD.
4. Final Interview - An HR type interview which mainly revolves around work
you’ve done in your POR. The Interview tries to asses if your goals and
personality aligns with that of the company.
General Tips
● Having knowledge about the company in general and what a field
engineer does will make you stand out in front of the interviewing panel
as it shows eagerness to work for them.
● Try not to focus on ML or software related projects during your interview
as these skills are not of much use for a field engineer.
● Do not get dissuaded by the low stipend. SLB is known to offer PPOs of
large sums.
● The role of a field engineer is slightly physically demanding so try to
portray yourself as someone who is up for a challenge and can step out of
their comfort zone.
