Geotechnical Report Ibadan Apview

The geotechnical investigation for a proposed 10-storey building in Ibadan, Oyo State, revealed a soil profile of lateritic silty sands underlain by stiff clayey soil. Recommendations include a piled foundation to a depth of 10-12m for structural integrity, with an estimated bearing capacity of over 400 kN/m². Additional laboratory testing is suggested for final design confirmation.

1. Executive Summary
This geotechnical investigation was conducted for a proposed 10-storey building located in
Ibadan, Oyo State. Three boreholes were drilled to a depth of 15.0 meters on April 6, 2023,
and Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were performed. The investigation revealed a profile
of lateritic silty sands underlain by stiff clayey soil with medium to high strength.
Recommendations have been provided for foundation design based on these findings.
2. Introduction
Apview Geotechnical Engineering Services Ltd. was commissioned by Mr. Shakirullah
Adetunji to conduct a geotechnical investigation to support foundation design for a
proposed multi-storey development in Ibadan, Oyo State.
3. Project Description
The proposed development involves the construction of a 10-storey reinforced concrete-
framed building, intended for commercial use. The structural loads are expected to be
significant, necessitating thorough subsurface assessment.
4. Site Location and Accessibility
The project site is situated in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, within an urban area characterized
by residential and light commercial buildings. The site is accessible via paved and laterite
roads.
5. Scope of Work
The investigation aimed to:

- Assess the subsurface stratigraphy.

- Determine allowable bearing capacity.

- Recommend suitable foundation type.

- Estimate potential settlements.

6. Field Investigations
Drilling & Sampling:

- Three (3) boreholes were drilled to 15.0m depth using a rotary wash boring rig.

- Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected.

SPT Testing:

- Standard Penetration Tests were carried out at 1.5m intervals.

- Recorded blow counts (N-values) increased with depth, indicating denser material.
7. Laboratory Testing
Only field-based SPT results were obtained. Representative samples were also visually
classified. Laboratory tests such as moisture content, Atterberg limits, and particle size
distribution were recommended for follow-up (not conducted in this phase).
8. Subsurface Conditions
Typical soil profile across the site:

Depth (m) | Soil Type | SPT (N-value) | Remarks

0 – 1.5 | Silty CLAY, reddish-brown | 5–9 | Soft to firm

1.5 – 4.5 | Lateritic sandy SILT | 10–18 | Medium dense

4.5 – 10 | Silty SAND with lateritic nodules | 20–30 | Dense

10 – 15 | Clayey SAND / Weathered rock | 30+ | Very dense to hard strata

Groundwater was not encountered during drilling; however, long-term monitoring is

recommended.
9. Geotechnical Analysis
Bearing Capacity Estimate (from SPT correlations):

- Shallow foundation (at 1.5–2.0m): 150–200 kN/m² (gross)

- Deep foundation (pile to 10–12m): >400 kN/m² (gross)

Settlement:

- Estimated total settlement for shallow footing: 20–30 mm

- Pile foundations will result in negligible settlement.

10. Foundation Recommendations
Option 1: Raft Foundation - Suitable if differential settlement control is stringent and
subsoil conditions are uniform.

Option 2: Piled Foundation (Recommended) - Driven precast concrete or bored piles to 10–
12m depth.

Recommended pile capacity: 400–500 kN.

Minimum Factor of Safety: 3.0

Allowable Settlement: ≤ 25 mm
11. Construction Considerations
- Excavations should be protected against surface runoff.

- Shoring may be required for trench stability.

- Conduct full groundwater monitoring before excavation.

- Final foundation level should be verified by site engineer.

12. Conclusion
The site is geotechnically suitable for the proposed 10-storey structure. Pile foundations
founded at 10–12m are recommended for structural integrity and long-term performance.
Additional lab testing is suggested for final design confirmation.
13. Appendices
Appendix A: Borehole Logs (Example for BH1)

Depth (m) | Soil Description | SPT N | Remarks

0–1.5 | Silty clay, reddish-brown | 7 | Moist, firm

1.5–4.5 | Lateritic sandy silt | 13 | Medium dense

4.5–10.0 | Silty sand, reddish-brown | 24 | Dense

10.0–15.0 | Clayey sand / Weathered rock | 32 | Very dense
