Assignment 2

The document outlines Assignment No. 2 for the course AML 706, focusing on Finite Element Methods applied to marine structures, with a due date of April 2, 2025. It includes four questions requiring calculations of displacements and stresses in various truss structures, each with specific parameters such as area, modulus of elasticity, and lengths. Each question references accompanying figures for clarity and requires verification of force equilibrium at certain nodes.

Assignment No.

AML 706: Finite Element Methods and its Applications to
Marine
Due Date: 2nd April, 2025

Question 1
For the plane truss structure, as shown in Fig. (1), determine the displacement of node
2 and also determine the stress in each element. Given that area of the each bar used in
making truss is A = 30 × 10−4 m2 , modulus of elasticity of each bar is E = 9 GPa and
the value of L = 2.5 m

Question 2
For the truss shown in Fig. (2) solve for the horizontal and vertical components of
displacement at node 1 and determine the stress in each element. Also, verify force
equilibrium at node 1. All elements have (area)A = 8 × 10−4 m2 , modulus of elasticity
of each bar is E = 90 GPa and the value of L = 4 m

Question 3
For the truss shown in Fig. (3), solve for the horizontal and vertical components of
displacement at node 2 and node 3 and and also calculate the stress in each element
too. All elements have (area) A = 7.5 × 10−4 m2 and modulus of elasticity of each bar is
E = 75 GPa .

Question 3
For the truss shown in Fig. (4a) and Fig. (4b), determine the nodal displacements and
the stresses in each element. All elements have an area, A = 8 × 10−4 m2 and modulus of
elasticity of each bar is E = 200 GPa.Verify force equilibrium at node 1. The coordinates
of each node, in meters, are shown in the figure. All supports are ball-and-socket joints.
