Introduction to US Healthcare System

Welcome to HLTH 3305.002. As we go through the semester together, it is my intention to


present you with current information, materials, and experiences to enhance your skills in as
related to the US healthcare system, teamwork, and class collaboration. By applying the skills
taught during class, reflecting, and sharing your experiences with your classmates, we together,
truly become a community of learners.

US Healthcare System: (3 semester credit hours) This course examines the structure and
components of the U.S. healthcare system including hospitals, long-term care, home health and
hospice and an analysis of the roles and interconnections among these components. Students will
also receive an overview of payment sources and referral systems as well as an exploration of the
roles of healthcare professionals in various healthcare settings.

Course Objectives:

1) To identify the various components of the U.S. health care system.


2) To understand the different types of payment sources for health care.
3) To understand the role of the government in health care
4) To develop awareness of the complexity and interconnectedness of the multiple components of
the health care system and their impact on providers
5) To learn, understand and analyze the latest trends and changes in American healthcare.
6) To identify the value and benefits of teamwork and group approach in delivering healthcare
services.

Grading Policy

Grading Scale
A+ = 97-100 B+ =87-89 C+ =77-79 D+ =67-69

Quizzes (10 @ 5 pts): Throughout the semester there will be knowledge checks in the form of
online quizzes of the designated chapter, these will consist of 5 questions and will be timed at 30
minutes.
Teams Current Event Discussion(s) (6@10 pts): Each team will agree upon one current event
article related to the specific weeks content and chapter readings. Each team’s discussion will
have the article or material being referenced with all teammate’s names listed to be handed in for
credit the day of the discussion. Discussions should last no less that 10 minutes each.
Team Debate (50 pts): Teams will be assigned who they will be debating. The teams will
collaborate in class to determine the healthcare subject they would like to debate. On the day of
the debate, all materials used will be handed in with all teammate’s names listed to receive credit.
Each debate will last 30 minutes.
Team Professional Presentation (50 pts): Each team will compare the US Healthcare System
with another system throughout the world. Each team will produce a PowerPoint to present to the
class with their findings. All sources must be listed on the PowerPoint. Presentation should be no
more than 20 minutes.
Individual Peer Evaluation form (15 pts): All students will complete a peer evaluation form
(located in eLearning) this will be uploaded at the end of the semester with an evaluation of each
teammate for each team activity.
Exam (50 pts): At the end of the semester a final exam will be given. This will consist of all
material covered over the course of the semester.

Course & Instructor Policies
(make-up exams, extra credit, late work, special assignments, class attendance, classroom
citizenship, etc.)
 Late work will not be accepted unless under extreme circumstances.
 Extra Credit for the purposes of this course, extra credit will not be assigned.
 Class attendance will be critical for this course as we only meet once a week and many
of the projects are done in class and will not be able to be made up.
 Classroom citizenship as always, is necessary and essential in order to have a productive
and safe learning environment for all, please be courteous and respectful of one another.
 Classroom participation of all students is required. Within this class, we will be
working, learning, and growing as a community, this can only be achieved if all students
take an active role, be present, and engaged.

The instructor may provide class materials that will be made available to all students registered
for this class as they are intended to supplement the classroom experience. These materials may
be downloaded during the course; however, these materials are for registered students' use only.

Class Participation
Regular class participation is expected. Students who fail to participate in class regularly are
inviting scholastic difficulty. A portion of the grade for this course is directly tied to your
participation in this class. It also includes engaging in group or other activities during class that
solicit your feedback on homework assignments, readings, or materials covered in the lectures
(and/or labs). Class participation is documented by faculty. Successful participation is defined as
consistently adhering to University requirements, as presented in this syllabus. Failure to comply
with these University requirements is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct.

(a) Texas Senate Bill 17, the recent law that prohibits diversity, equity, and inclusion
programs and activities at public universities in Texas, does not in any way apply to
academic course instruction. Students should not feel the need to self-censor or limit their
participation in academic courses pertaining to topics of race and racism, structural

Class Recordings

Students are expected to follow appropriate University policies and maintain the security of
