LESSON 1

Dear CMY4801 students,

While preparing your assignments and portfolio, you have to adhere to these requirements:

Assessment criteria

You must submit all assignments on time. An extension for the submission of an
assignment will only be granted following Unisa policy and rules, provided that satisfactory
evidence of the reason for the request is provided. According to the policy, an extension of
the due date will be considered for work commitments or official travel arrangements (an
official letter from an employer is required), serious illness (a declaration from a medical
doctor confirming that it was impossible or undesirable for a student to submit an
assignment on, or before, the due date), or the death of a relative during the assessment
period (death certificate or other relevant proof). Please note that requests for an extension
must be made before the assignment due date, but no later than 5 working days after the
original due date.

In exceptional cases, the lecturer may change the due date of an assignment. You will be
informed of such a change via an announcement on the module's webpage, which will also
be emailed to students' myLife email addresses and an SMS.

Please note, that if an assignment is submitted after the due date without prior
arrangement and approval of an extension request, 10% will be deducted from the allocated
mark.

Lecturers are not allowed to grant an extension for a portfolio of evidence since the same
rules apply to the ones for venue-based exams. All requests for the extension of a
portfolio's due date must be directed to the exams division.

Even though guidelines are given for the assignments, we encourage you to work
independently as much as possible. However, you are welcome to discuss any specific
problems regarding the assignments with the lecturer.

Referencing and technical care:

An assignment is a scientific document, so it must adhere to the requirements of scientific

writing. It must be systematic, form a logical unit, and be verifiable by the reader. The
assignments must demonstrate proper compilation and include a variety of sources (not
just those that confirm your views).

You are expected to consult a minimum of ten (10) sources.

* Assignments must be typed and submitted in PDF format, using Arial, Font 12, 1.5 line
spacing, and justify (Ctrl + J) your text.

*The length of the assignment should not exceed 5,000 words. This excludes the cover
pages and the list of references.

• Students at the Honours level are required to demonstrate appropriate mental

processing of the content of consulted literature, display correct source referencing
techniques in the text, and provide correctly formulated bibliographical entries
reflecting references to sources that have been consulted.
• A title page, table of contents, and other appropriate technical handling of academic
material are also prerequisites.
• Present the full title of the topic
• The scientific presentation and technical care of an assignment will be taken into
consideration when marks are awarded. If you merely reproduce or summarise
information from source material without integrating theory and practice, you will be
penalised.
• Proper referencing and technical care are also essential, and failing to meet these
requirements will result in a loss of marks. Please refer to the guidelines for
referencing (Tutorial letter SCHJALL/301/4/2025) posted on the myUnisa website,
which is the official study material for CM4801.

* Plagiarism is a serious offence according to the Student Disciplinary Code.

Students found guilty of this transgression may face disciplinary charges.
• All assignments must be submitted on Turnitin to check for any plagiarism-related
activities.
• Do not wait till the last hour to submit your final Turnitin report or the assignment

• Turnitin serves two important functions. Firstly, it alerts students to possible

instances of plagiarism in their work. Secondly, it acts as a teaching tool to help
students develop scientific writing skills and avoid actions associated with
plagiarism. You are required to log in to Turnitin and submit all assignments and
portfolios to ensure the originality of your document.
• The similarity of your assignment/portfolio should be below 35% for the entire
document. Instructions on how to access Turnitin on the Moodle platform will be
communicated to students soon.

Below is general information on the structure of the assignment:

- Title page: Copy the exact title.

- Table of Contents: Include a heading (i.e., Table of Contents), numbered headings
(e.g., 1. Introduction; 2. Definitions; 2.1. Assertive, 2.2. Self-control, etc.), and the
corresponding page numbers.
- Use sub-headings and numbering accordingly (e.g., 1. Introduction, 2. Definitions,
2.1. Assertive, 2.2. Self-control, etc.).
- In the Introduction, briefly outline the "who," "what," "where," "why," and "how" of the
theory being discussed, providing the historical background of the theory.
- Include 3-4 scientific definitions in your presentation and consult 2-3 scientific
sources per definition (avoid consulting dictionaries). Avoid quoting all definitions;
one-liner or vague definitions are also unacceptable.
- Throughout the text, state, refer to, and cite sources. Make sure sources cited in-
text are also included in the bibliography, and vice versa. Apply the Harvard
reference technique.
- Use practical and relevant examples to illustrate your understanding and
interpretation of the facts.
- Avoid providing irrelevant information that does not directly relate to the topic's
content.
- Do not use a bullet point writing style; instead, discuss, critically analyze, and
debate the topic in an essay writing style.
- Evaluate the theory by listing its positive and negative aspects. Consult at least
three sources for this evaluation.

Conclusion:

What is your opinion on the theory? Is it valuable in explaining criminal behavior? Did it
contribute to new policies, etc.?

Avoid personification - terms such as "I," "we," "us," and "our" - stay factual and scientific.

Avoid abbreviations without presenting the word first - for example, South Africa (SA), then
use SA hereafter in the essay.

Acronyms: Write out acronyms for the first time; thereafter use the acronym - for example,
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS). "Statistics for DCS for 2010-2011 ..."

DO NOT rewrite/copy the content of a source "word for word" in the assignment. Interpret
the work in your own words/according to your understanding.

Avoid using too many direct quotations since it does not reflect your autonomous work.

Avoid using outdated sources. Sources should ideally not be older than ten (10) years. Use
recent sources

Also, make use of the following free site, "Internet Archive," at https://archive.org/

Just register with an email account and you will have access to various types of media,
such as books, audio, movies, etc. You can borrow 5 items for 14 days.
Do not consult Wikipedia or any online study guides.

Do not use any undergraduate study guides as sources for your assignments.

Pay attention to your spelling (ensure that the language on your computer is South
African/UK English) and grammar, as well as your sentence construction. Write in full
sentences that flow logically and coherently. You can also download the Grammarly App to
assist you with your writing skills.

Alternate the use of words in your assignment. For instance, do not begin every
sentence/reference of a paragraph with "According to Siegel..." or "Siegel states that..."

Avoid using the following incorrect example: According to Siegel (2020:2), states that...

You can either use "According to Siegel (2020:2)" or "Siegel (2020:2) states..."

Write out numbers one to ten.

Sources cited in the bibliography should be presented in alphabetical order.

The assignment is out of 100.
