Stephanie Jones Reference Collection Evaluation Consideration List Reference Collection Evaluation and Consideration List A. General Media Center Analysis To help with the process of evaluating the reference collection, the media specialist printed out a shelf list. She suggested that I physically look at the materials located in the reference section. This would allow me to see the condition of the materials. If something was questionable, I could use the list to cross-check the books that were actually on the shelves. She felt that the shelf list report gives an accurate account of the titles included on the reference collection. In order to evaluate the items in the reference collection, I needed a better understanding of when certain types of reference materials should be replaced. So, before starting the evaluation, I did some research to find out when to replace the items located in the reference collection. My research was reflective of what the media specialist had shared with me. Below is a table that lists the different items located in the reference section and when to weed them: Item Almanacs When to Replace Every 2 years, keep older editions for historic research, keep all editions of the state almanacs for the unique information they provide Keep unabridged editions, update special dictionaries every 5-7 years Every 5 - 7 years, supplement with electronic formats

B. Collection Description I spent some time looking through the schools current reference collection. While all of the materials are in good condition, there is a definite need to update and replace some of the materials in the collection. There are approximately 200 titles that make up the reference collection and the average age is 1996. The table below gives a brief snapshot of the items located in the reference collection and their publication date: Item

C. Budget Summary After reviewing and analyzing the current reference collection, I identified areas that need to be updated. The first materials list contains print titles. Of these titles, two have not been published. They will be available in July of this year. The second list contains on-line resources. The Power Media Plus would be a new resource for the school. The Encyclopedia Britannica purchase would be a continuation of the current subscription. It is a valuable resource for all grade levels. One feature that is especially valuable is the text to speech feature. This feature allows young children to independently conduct research and locate information. The Power Media Plus has numerous features, making it an excellent addition to the media centers online resources. It contains a large library of graphics, audio clips, videos, and print resources. State standards and benchmarks are linked to articles when appropriate. This makes it valuable to teachers. The material consideration list, which includes print and on-line resources, totals $2488.92.
