Short Answer Questions: What to Expect

1. For the first short answer question, you will be asked to answer ONE of two options.
These questions are structured very similarly to the short answer Qs on the past two
midterms. As such, you should have a good sense of what to expect with these options
(e.g., the option will ask you to name AND define aspects of a concept we discussed in
class and will ask you to provide examples, strengths, and or limitations of such aspects
of the concept). Because you are all familiar with this style of question by now, I have
not provided an example Q.

2. The second short answer question is mandatory for you to answer. This question is
structured slightly differently than the first set of short answer questions as it is an
applied knowledge question rather than a memory-based question. In particular, I will
give you a topic related to “looking” deviant, substance use and harm reduction, OR
mental illness that you will then be asked to analyze using a theory, idea, or concept from
class. Here is a specific example:

(10 points total) In class, we discussed the concept of “safer supply” as it pertains to harm
reduction and we heard many viewpoints about the topic. Using either an objectivist OR
subjectivist lens, describe how an objectivist or subjectivist researcher might explore the
topic of safer supply (for example, what types of knowledge would an objectivist or
subjectivist be interested in understanding when it comes to safer supply? What kind of
questions might they ask when trying to understand safer supply? What is one limitation
of using solely an objectivist or subjectivist approach when understanding safer supply?)
(6 points). In your answer, be sure to first (1) define/explain what safer supply is (2
points) and (2) use a concrete example in your explanation (2 points).
