Conservation of Momentum in Two-Dimensions
Unit 3: Energy and Momentum Formal Lab
Procedure: Record your setup and steps taken in the simulation in your formal lab report for the
four types of collisions.
1. Compare the sum of the two x components of velocity after the collision with the
initial velocity before the collision.
2. Compare the sum of the two y components of velocity after the collision with the
initial velocity before the collision.
3. Calculate the kinetic energy of each of the masses and compare it with the kinetic
energy before the collision (Direction is not important in this calculation).
4. What have you found out about the kinetic energy before and after the collision
generally?
5. Calculate the momentum of the system before and after the collision( Direction is
Important)
6. What have you found out about the momentum before and after the collision
generally?
7. Show one sample calculation for one of your 4 collision types.
