TEACHING MATHEMATICS (GRADES 5-12) IN TIMES OF QUARANTINE AND BEYOND

Compiled by Betina Zolkower (Working Draft, 4/13/20)

Assorted Examples

Below are just a few examples I found particularly interesting. The websites listed below
these examples have a ton of wonderful stuff. Enjoy!

On Numberphile (Youtube) there is a great interview with a mathematician: Coronavirus

Curve. Very well explained, a powerful example of the value of mathematical modelling:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6nLfCbAzgo

Sample Concept Development Lesson from Mathshell (Mathematics Assessment Project)

on “Representing Functions, Everyday Situations”
https://www.map.mathshell.org/download.php?fileid=1740
The material in Mathshell is invaluable for prospective as well as for practicing teachers in
that it includes ‘rich tasks’ (beginner, intermediate, expert), ‘conceptual development’
lessons, formative assessment lessons, and student work samples (unscored, and scored)

A lesson on fractals (from Creativity in Mathematics):

https://cre8math.com/2015/10/04/creating-fractals/

A wonderful James Tanton’s lesson on generating Pythagorean triplets using the

multiplication table:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9mtb1j21to
Also from James Tanton, his list of great math stuff in Think Curriculum!:
http://www.jamestanton.com/?category_name=curriculum-tidbits
See also, in his essay “The Outstanding Power of Area,” the ‘garden paths’ model for
representing and solving probability problems:
https://gdaymath.com/lessons/powerarea/4-2-garden-paths/
And, also, his short essay on a quick way to sketch quadratics:
http://www.jamestanton.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/microsoft-word-
curriculum-essay-1.pdf
James Tanton’s videos could be used as substitutes for ‘virtual fieldwork.’ Despite the fact
that it is one-way communication (no interaction with students), his videos are exemplars
of skillful teaching (e.g. with regard to inquiry-type questions, that is questions that focus
on meaning-making as opposed to mere procedural matters, his use of diagrams, and the
multiple connections he makes among different mathematical strands and topics)

A Numberphile video on 'impossible' (lattice point) squares:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyVl-tcB8pI
(I recommend that you subscribe to this channel so you can receive daily problems)

In YouTube, A Mind of Decisions video/problem:

(I recommend that you subscribe to this channel)

Two YouTube videos from 3Blue1Brown
“Simulating an epidemic:

“A counting puzzle”:

(Also, make sure to subscribe)

A very nice problem in nrich entitled “Parabella”:

https://nrich.maths.org/785
Also in nrich, here is the link to the collection of poster/problems for secondary grades
(there is one for primary grades):
https://nrich.maths.org/8114
Also in nrich, here is “Mad Robot,” a lovely programming problem:
https://nrich.maths.org/7056

Three nice problems/activities from Wildmaths:

https://wild.maths.org/just-one-cut

In Plus Magazine there is, as expected, lots of stuff related to the pandemic, e.g.:
https://plus.maths.org/content/maths-minute-r0-and-herd-immunity
But there is other stuff as well, e.g.:
About different notions of ‘average’: https://plus.maths.org/content/equal-averages
A problem involving pancakes: https://plus.maths.org/content/maths-minut-flipping-
pancakes
Also, a very interesting article entitled “How much maths can you eat?”:
https://plus.maths.org/content/how-much-maths-can-you-eat

From Underground Mathematics:

Also there:
https://undergroundmathematics.org/circles/finding-circles/main-problem
(check out the warm up problem also)

From the Geometry Junkyard, a list of junk:

https://www.ics.uci.edu/~eppstein/junkyard/topic.html

In Cut the Knot, there is this nice “Butterfly Theorem”:

http://www.cut-the-knot.org/pythagoras/Butterfly.shtml

Two Don Steward powerpoints (there are lots of very nice ones):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t_8mF0yteCSOLKRr5dEvCH7hbluty0ay/view
Another one, this one on difference of squares:

A site with data on the Titanic (very useful for designing stats lessons on conditional
probability): http://www.icyousee.org/titanic.html

Math competition exams from UKMT Senior (they also have Junior and Intermediate):
https://www.ukmt.org.uk/competitions/solo/senior-mathematical-challenge/archive
After working on the problems (;-), I always like to look at the pdf with Solutions and
Investigations, e.g. here is the November 2018 exam:
https://www.ukmt.org.uk/sites/default/files/ukmt/senior-mathematical-
challenge/SMC2018_sol_extended.pdf

Math-Science Connections

PRIMAS: Professional Development Resources: lots of lesson ideas, handouts,

assessments, conversations with teachers, videoclips, etc., all of it involving IBL (inquiry-
based learning):
https://www.primas.mathshell.org/pd.htm
(e.g. lessons on spirolaterals, sharing petrol, counting dentists, body mass index, algebraic
expressions, etc.). Spirolaterals:
https://www.primas.mathshell.org/pd/modules/1_Student_led_inquiry/pdf/1_Activity_C_
Spirolaterals_lesson_plan.pdf
The immense wealth of material to be found in PRIMAS is very suitable for ‘virtual field
assignments, including lesson observations (see videos A, B, C,…. H on the site) as well as
for helping prospective teachers prepare their initial certification portfolio, especially with
regards to the Assessment section.

A wonderful essay on “Asteroids and Dinosaurs” in Understanding Science:

https://undsci.berkeley.edu/article/alvarez_01

Last but not least a very inspirational science/math video: The Origami Revolution (PBS,
Nova):
