Part D: Application
Answer the following questions in the space provided, show full solutions for all marks.

16. The trunk of a leaning tree makes an angle of 12º with the vertical. To prevent the tree from falling over,
a 35 m rope is attached to the top of the tree and anchored into level ground some distance away. If the
tree is 20 m from its base to its top, calculate the angle the rope makes with the ground. (3 marks)
tree height = 20
rope length = 35
tree angle = 12

horizontal distance of tree top:

x = 20 * sin 12
x = 20 * 0.2079
x = 4.158

horizontal distance from base to anchor point:

d=x+?
rope horizontal component:
d = sqrt(35^2 - 20^2)
d = sqrt(1225 - 400)
d = sqrt(825)
d = 28.7228

horizontal distance from tree base to anchor:

ground distance = d

angle rope makes with ground:

theta = arctan(20 / 28.7228)
theta = arctan(0.6965)
theta = 34.87
= 34.9 degrees
17. The posts of a hockey goal net are 2.0 m apart. A player attempts to score by shooting a puck along the
ice from a point 6.5 m from one post and 8.0 m from the other. Within what angle θ must the shot be
made to score? (3 marks)
post distance = 2.0
distances: 6.5, 8.0

use cosine law:

cos theta = (6.5^2 + 8.0^2 - 2.0^2) / (2 * 6.5 * 8.0)
cos theta = (42.25 + 64 - 4) / (104)
cos theta = 102.25 / 104
cos theta = 0.98245

theta = arccos(0.98245)
theta = 10.75
=10.8 degrees
