8. Alice is riding a Ferris wheel, where t is time in seconds. Suppose the Ferris wheel is 22 m tall. Let
represent the height of Alice in m above or below the centre of the Ferris wheel. Relative to the centre
of the Ferris wheel, what is the lowest height Alice achieves?
a. m c. m The highest value of h(t) = 11 * 1 = 11
b. 12 m d. 11 m The lowest value of h(t) = 11 * (-1) = -11
So the lowest height relative to the center is -11 meters.
Correct answer: c. -11 m
9. The height of a saw tooth in inches after time in seconds is represented by the function
for t > 0. Without graphing the function, determine the minimum height that the saw tooth
reaches.
a. c. Max y = 0.6 - 0.4 = 0.2
b. d.
Min y = -0.6 - 0.4 = -1.0
Answer: d. -1.0

14. Determine the exact values of the following, show work for full marks. (4 marks)
2 tan 30
a) sin 300
b) cos 30
sin 45
300 degrees is in
Quadrant IV. = (sqr(3)/2) * (2 * (1/sqr(3)) / (sqr(2)/2))
sin 300degrees = - = (sqr(3)/2) * (2/sqr(3)) * (2/sqr(2))
sin(360degrees - = (sqr(3)/2) * (4/sqr(3) * sqr(2))
300degrees) = (4 * sqr(3)) / (2 * sqr(3) * sqr(2))
= -sin 60 = (4) / (2 * sqr(2))
= -sqr3/2 = 2/sqr(2)
= sqr(2)
15. Prove the following identities, show your steps for full marks. (6 marks)

cos x * (1 + sec x) * (cos x - 1) (1 + cot^2 x) / csc^2 x
= cos x * (1 + 1/cos x) * (cos x - 1) = csc^2 x / csc^2 x
= (cos x + 1) * (cos x - 1) =1
= cos^2 x - 1
= -sin^2 x

Answer the following questions in the space provided, show full solutions for all marks.
16. The trunk of a leaning tree makes an angle of 12º with the vertical. To prevent the tree from falling over,
a 35 m rope is attached to the top of the tree and anchored into level ground some distance away. If the
tree is 20 m from its base to its top, calculate the angle the rope makes with the ground. (3 marks)
tree height = 20
rope length = 35
tree angle = 12
