Five-Year Integrated M.Sc.

Examination 2023
Semester-IV
Paper: Quantum Mechanics and Relativity (PH-2-4-1)

Time: Three Hours Full Marks: 60

Questions are of value as indicated in the margin.

Answer Question No. 1 and any five from the rest.

1. Answer any five from the following: 5x2 = 10

(a) Calculate the wavelength of the third line of Balmer series of H-atom spectra. Given, R H
= 1.097x107 m-1.
(b) Find the de Broglie wavelength of a 10 keV electron. Given, me = 9.109x10-31 kg.
(c) A photon of energy 110 keV suffers 10% change in wavelength on being scattered by a
stationary free electron. Find the kinetic energy of the recoil electron.
(d) The lifetime of an excited state of an atom is 10-8 s. Calculate the minimum uncertainty in
the determination of the energy of the excited state.
(e) Define Hermitian operator. Explain why Hermitian operators are important in quantum
mechanics.
(f) Consider a stationary state of energy 𝐸. Find how the wave function 𝛹 (𝑡) for this state
varies with time.
(g) A meter stick that is moving parallel to its length is measured when its velocity is 0.98c.
What is the length of the meter stick compared to its rest length?

2. (a) Derive Planck’s radiation formula and show it graphically for two different temperatures.
(b) A source operates at a frequency of 50 MHz and radiates a power of 100 kW. Calculate
the number of quanta emitted per second by the source.
7+3 = 10

3. (a) Using Bohr’s postulates for the spectra of hydrogen like atoms, derive the formulae and
calculate the velocity, radius and energy of the first Bohr orbit for H-atom.
(b) How much energy is required to remove an electron from the n = 3 state of a hydrogen
atom?
7+3 = 10

4. (a) What do you mean by ‘matter waves’?

(b) Describe Davisson-Germer experiment on the diffraction of electrons. How does it estab-
lish the wave nature of matter?

and write down the appropriate boundary conditions.
(b) Solving this Schrӧdinger equation, find out the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of infinite
potential well.
4+(3+3) = 10
7. (a) Explain Michelson-Morley experiment. What conclusion is drawn regarding the existence
of ether in vacuum.
(b) Write down Einstein’s postulates for special theory of relativity.
7+3 = 10

8. (a) Derive an expression showing the variation of mass of a body with its velocity.
(b) All neon lights in a city flicker in unison 120 times a second. A jet plane flying over the
city at a speed of 1800 km h-1 observes the flicker. What would be the flicker period to him?
7+3 = 10
