Sensorial Education

Sensorial Education, rooted in the Montessori method, emphasizes the development of a child's senses from birth through structured exercises and materials. Its purpose is to refine sensory perception, enhance vocabulary, and foster logical thinking through hands-on experiences. Various categories of sensorial exercises target different senses, including visual, auditory, tactile, and more, allowing children to explore and classify their environment effectively.

SENSORIAL EDUCATION

DEFINITION
Sensorial is derived from the word sense or senses. Montessori believes that Sensorial
Experiences begin at birth. We build our knowledge and understand the world through the
senses. This process is slow and it takes place throughout childhood and into adulthood.
Sensorial Exercises are exercises or activities that helps the child to concentrate on the
refinement of the senses. The Montessori Sensorial Materials are used to achieve this goal.
Hence, use of the sensorial materials to refine the child′s senses so that he can understand his
world better based on what he sees, touches, smells, etc., is termed as Sensorial Education.
PURPOSE OF SENSORIAL EXERCISES OR WORK
a) The purpose of Sensorial Exercises is to enable the child acquire clear conscious
information and be able to make classifications in his environment.
b) Also, it will help the child attain maximum refinement of the senses and help him
build an idea hidden in various stimuli.
c) Finally, it provides the child ′′Sensorial Explorer′′ an opportunity to attend to his
perception and discriminate between finer and finer variations using the senses.
IMPORTANCE OF SENSORIAL EDUCATION
a) The sensory –motor materials used have been systematically planned for all the senses
and so permit the child to form new concepts through experience, exploration and
repetition
b) Also, the design and use of the materials encourages the child to work in a systematic
way to enhance the organisation and classification of information which contributes to
logical thinking.
c) The child is introduced to specific language for the new experiences, attributes and
skills he has acquired and therefore his vocabulary development is enhanced for fuller
explanation on how we introduce new vocabulary.
d) The control of error within the apparatus help the child solve problems and find
solutions to achieving the desired aim. Example; every cylinder block comes with the
socket to fit each cylinder, so when a child is working with the cylinder block and
searching for the right socket to fit the cylinders, it’s easier for them to achieve this
goal.
e) Many of the materials help develop the child′s muscular memory and co−ordination,
and some prepare the muscles for later specific tasks. Eg, the feeling around the plane
figures in the Geometric Cabinet Prepares the child for tracing around the s Sand
Paper Letters and Numerals.
CATEGORIES OF SENSORIAL EXERCISES

1. Visual Sense; the child learns to perceive or discriminate the differences in

similar and different objects in terms of size, form or colour.
Examples of exercises or activities; Knobbed Cylinders, Pink Tower, Red
Rod, etc Montessori Visual Exercises are categorised into;
a. Visual Discriminating in Size
Knobbed Cylinders, Pink Tower, Red Rod/ Long Rod, Broad Stairs/ Brown Stairs
and Knobless Cylinder
b. Visual Discriminating in Form or Shape
Geometric Cabinet, Constructive Triangle(Rectangular Triangles, Blue Rectangular
Box, Triangular Box, Large Hexagonal Box and Small Hexagonal Box), Binomial
Cube, Trinomial Cube, Leaf cabinet, Sensorial Decanomial, Geometrical Figures

2. Chromatic Sense; the child learns to perceive the differences between primary
and secondary colours as well as their gradation.
Colour Tablets: Colour Tablets are categorised into Colour Box 1,2, 3
Colour Box 1 made up of 6Tablets of Primary Colour, i.e. pair of Red, Blue
and Yellow.

3. Stereognostic Sense ; the child learns throw the hand to perceive the size,
shape or form of an object with the eyes closed .
Geometric Solids, Mystery Bag, Sorting Tray

4. Tactile Sense ; the
