Manchester

Introduction

Hello, young explorers! Let’s discover

Manchester, one of the biggest and most
exciting cities in England. Manchester is
located in the north-west of the country,
near the River Irwell and surrounded by beautiful hills like the Pennines. It’s a
city full of energy, music, and history.

The name Manchester comes from the Latin words Mamucium or Mancunium,
which were used by the Romans who built a fort here around 79 AD. The name is
believed to mean "breast-shaped hill," describing the land where the fort once
stood. Today, people from Manchester are often called "Mancunians."

Manchester is famous as the world’s first industrial city. During the 1800s, it
became the center of the textile industry, with many factories and cotton mills.
This made the city grow very quickly and brought people from many places to
live and work here.

The city is also well known for its love of sports and music. It’s home to two
famous football clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City, and famous
bands like Oasis and The Smiths started here!

Today, Manchester is a lively and diverse city with over 500,000 people. It’s a
place where history, culture, and creativity come together. Are you ready to
explore Manchester? Let’s go!
History

Manchester’s history is as exciting as

its busy streets! It’s a city that grew
from a small Roman fort into one of
the most important cities in England.

A long time ago, around 79 AD, the

Romans built a fort called Mamucium in Manchester to protect their land. You
can still visit parts of this old Roman fort today! After the Romans left,
Manchester stayed small for many centuries, with only a few farms and houses.

In medieval times, Manchester slowly became a market town. People came from
nearby villages to sell wool, animals, and food. The town grew around a church
and a market square. By the 14th century, Manchester was known for making
wool cloth, and small workshops appeared along the river. Life was simple, and
most people worked as farmers or craftsmen.

Everything changed in the 18th and 19th centuries, when Manchester became
the world’s first industrial city. It was famous for making cotton and cloth in
big factories called mills. The city filled with workers, machines, and canals to
carry goods. People from all over came to work here, and Manchester became
known as "Cottonopolis."

Life during this time was busy and tough. Many families lived in small, crowded
houses near the factories. Even children worked in the mills. But Manchester
was also a place where people wanted to make life better. In 1819, a big protest
called the Peterloo Massacre happened, as people asked for fairer rights.

In the 20th century, Manchester became famous for its music, football, and
science. Today, it’s a modern city that remembers its strong past while looking
forward to the future. Manchester’s story is one of hard work, creativity, and
change – and there’s always more to discover!
Icons

Hello, little History explorers! It’s impossible

to talk about Manchester without mentioning
its two biggest icons: Manchester United and
the music of Oasis.

Let’s explore Manchester United, one of the most famous football clubs in the
world. The club was founded in 1878 and has played at Old Trafford since 1910.
Known as "The Red Devils," the team wears its iconic red shirts, loved by
millions of fans across the globe.

Manchester United’s story is full of big victories and challenges. One of the
most tragic moments in its history was the Munich air disaster in 1958, when a
plane crash killed eight players and three staff members. But the club stayed
strong and rebuilt, winning many trophies in the years that followed.

Now let’s talk about Oasis, one of the most famous bands to come from
Manchester. Formed in 1991, the band was led by the Gallagher brothers, Liam
and Noel. Their music was powerful and catchy, with songs like “Wonderwall” and
“Don’t Look Back in Anger” becoming anthems for a generation.

Each one of the brothers had their own style. Liam’s cool attitude and strong
voice made him the perfect frontman, while Noel wrote many of the band’s
greatest hits. Their songs were filled with energy and emotion, inspiring fans
around the world.

Even today, Oasis’s music is still loved by many. Visitors to Manchester can take
tours of places linked to the band and feel the city’s musical spirit. The legacy
of Manchester United and Oasis continues to make the city famous across the
globe!

tall modern buildings, popular shops, and tasty restaurants. Deansgate is also
