its busy streets! It’s a city that grew
from a small Roman fort into one of
the most important cities in England.

A long time ago, around 79 AD, the


Romans built a fort called Mamucium in Manchester to protect their land. You
can still visit parts of this old Roman fort today! After the Romans left,
Manchester stayed small for many centuries, with only a few farms and houses.

In medieval times, Manchester slowly became a market town. People came from
nearby villages to sell wool, animals, and food. The town grew around a church
and a market square. By the 14th century, Manchester was known for making
wool cloth, and small workshops appeared along the river. Life was simple, and
most people worked as farmers or craftsmen.

Everything changed in the 18th and 19th centuries, when Manchester became
the world’s first industrial city. It was famous for making cotton and cloth in
big factories called mills. The city filled with workers, machines, and canals to
carry goods. People from all over came to work here, and Manchester became
known as "Cottonopolis."

Life during this time was busy and tough. Many families lived in small, crowded
