• A breadboard is a tool you can use to
build electronic circuits.
• It gets its name from long ago when
people used to build electronic circuits
on actual pieces of wood that were
used for cutting loaves of bread.
• Circuit breadboards have become
useful tools for creating electronic
prototypes. Each hole on the
breadboard contains a metal connector
that pinches wires when wires are
inserted into the holes. This helps keep
the wires from pulling out and gives the
circuit secure connections.

Electric Current: The Flow of Electrons

Electricity can be thought of as the flow of electrons
through a conductive path. This flow is what powers our
homes, offices, and cities. One way to measure electricity
is by electric current. Just like how we measure the flow of
water in a river, we measure the flow of electrons in a
conductive path. This flow of electrons is called the electric
current.
3
The current is measured in amperes or amps for short.
Voltage: A Measure of Electrical Energy
Voltage is a measure of the difference in electrical energy between two points. It represents the
comparison of the number of electrons at one place versus another. Think of voltage as pressure that
pushes electrons through a circuit – the more electrons, the more pressure and the more voltage.
The unit for measuring voltage is the volt. For example, a standard AA battery has a voltage of 1.5 volts
between its two ends. In the United States, a standard wall outlet has a voltage of about 120 volts, while
in most European, Asian, and African countries, it's around 220 volts.

4
Resistance is just what it sounds like – a measure of how a material resists the flow of
electrons. Good insulators such as plastic, rubber, and glass have very high resistance,
slowing the flow of electrons. Good conductors such as metal have very low resistance and
allow electrons to easily flow. Resistance is measured in ohms. The Greek symbol omega
(Ω) is often used to symbolize resistance in ohms.

Main Concepts: Electronics
Electricity: Movement of charge through a conductor, and charge carriers are called electrons.
Different materials can be good conductors or poor conductors. Goods conductors like metal let
electricity (electrons) flow easily. Poor conductors don’t allow electricity to flow, or only allow a
little.
Wire: A long thin piece of metal that is used to carry electric current.
Circuit: A complete circular path that electricity flows through. A simple circuit consists of a
current source, conductors and a load.
Battery: Small devices that provide the power for electrical items.
Switch: Small device that starts or stops the flow of electricity to something.
Resistor: Electrical component that limits or regulates the flow of electrical current in an electronic
circuit.
Breadboard: A board for prototyping or building circuits on.
Controller: A small computer integrated into a single chip
Arduino: Refers to an open-source electronics platform or board and the software used to
program it.

HOMEWORK: Paste pictures of the following components: DC motor, resistor, battery, LED,
switch , push button, protoboard.

The breadboard is the
primary place you will be
building circuits. This one is
solderless because you
don´t have to solder
anything together, sort of
like a lego in electronic
form.
The horizontal and vertical
rows carry electricity
through thin metal
connectors under the plastic
with holes.
