1 Marks Questions
1. The load taken by a three-phase induction motor is measured by the two-wattmeter method,
and the readings are 860 W and 240 W. What is the active power taken by the motor and at
what power factor is it working?
2. Why 3-phase, 4 wire Y connections is used for distributing electrical power? Briefly, explain.
3. Find the reluctance of an air gap of 0.5mm width and cross-sectional area of 10 cm2. Consider
the standard value of μ0.
4. In a transformer, the hysteresis loss is found to be 52 Watt at 40 Hz. Compute the hysteresis loss
at 50 Hz.
5. State two differences between a squirrel cage and slip ring induction motor.

2.5 Marks Questions


1. A single phase 4kVA transformer has 400 primary turns and 1000 secondary turns. The net
cross-sectional area of the core is 60 cm2. When the primary winding is connected to 500V,
50Hz supply, calculate: (i) the maximum flux density in the core (ii) the voltage induced in the
secondary winding and (iii) the secondary full load current.
2. Explain the principle of operation and constructional features of a 3-phase Induction Motor.
3. Derive the torque equation for a DC motor? And, justify why DC series motors are used for high
torque applications?
4. An 8-pole dc generator has 500 armature conductors and a useful flux of 0.05 Wb per pole.
What will be the emf generated if it is lap connected and runs at 1200 rpm? What must be the
speed at which it is to be driven to produce the same emf if it is wave wound?
5. An iron ring of mean length 100 cm has an air gap of 2 mm and a winding of 400 turns. If the
permeability of iron is 400 and a current of 2.5 A flow through the coil, find out the flux density.
6. A separately excited DC generator has armature circuit resistance of 0.1 Ω and the total brush
drop is 2 V. When running at 1000 rpm, it delivers a current of 100 A at 250 V to a load of
constant resistance. If the generator speed drop to 700 rpm, with field current unaltered, find
the current delivered to the load.
7. A 240 V dc shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.25 Ω, and runs at 1000 rpm,
taking an armature current of 40 A. It is desired to reduce the speed to 800 rpm.(i) If the
armature current remains the same, find the additional resistance to be inserted in series with
the armature circuit.(ii) If, with the above additional resistance in the circuit, armature current
decreases to 20 A, find the speed of the motor.
8. Explain the working principle of a three phase induction motor with relevant diagram.
9. A 4-pole, 3 phase Induction Motor operates from a supply whose frequency is 50 Hz. Calculate,
a. The speed at which magnetic field of stator is rotating.
b. The speed of the rotor when the slip is 0.04.
c. The frequency of rotor current when slip is 0.03.
d. The frequency of rotor current at standstill
10. How to control the speed of a D.C. Shunt motor. Explain it with one example.
11. With neat sketch explain power system structure starting from generation to distribution.
12. A single-phase transformer has 600 turns on primary winding 1200 turns on secondary winding.
If it is operating at 50Hz supply with a maximum flux of 0.055Wb. Find: (I) Primary &Secondary
induced EMF (II) EMF induced per turn.
13. With the help of neat diagram, explain the constructional details of three phase induction
motor.
14. Explain the significance of slip in induction motor. What do you mean by slip speed?
15. If a coil of 150 turns is linked with a flux of 0.01 Wb when carrying current of 10A, calculate the
inductance of the coil. If this current is uniformly reversed in 0.01 second, calculate the induced
electromotive force.
16. Establish the relation between B and H. (B- Flux density, H- Magnetic field strength)

5 Marks Questions
1. Discuss the principle of operation of a single-phase transformer. Derive the emf equation.
Also discuss the constructional features of it.
2. Draw and explain the ‘torque – speed’ characteristics of a three phase induction motor.
3. What are the main parts of a DC generator? Give the classification of DC generator
depending on their field of excitation. Draw relevant diagram.
4. Explain the principle of operation of a single phase transformer. Also, derive an expression
for the EMF induced in a transformer winding.
5. Draw the layout of electric power supply system. Draw the schematic layout of a thermal
power plant and explain the principle of power generation in such plants.
6. State the working principle of a transformer. Draw the phasor diagram of an ideal
transformer under no load condition.
7. An 8-pole, dc shunt generator has 778 wave-connected conductors on its armature. While
running at 500 rpm, it supplies power to a load of 12.5 Ω at 250 V. The armature and the
shunt -field resistances are 0.24 Ω and 250 Ω, respectively. Determine the armature current,
the emf induced, and the flux per pole.
