SIR® 30 Versions
The latest Software and Firmware version for the SIR 30 system can be downloaded from the GSSI Tech
Support website:
https://support.geophysical.com/gssiSupport/Products/SIR30/Software/SIR30Maint.zip
Please refer to the SIR 30 Maintenance Tool document for instructions to upgrade your system.
Added/Changed Features
1 Support has been added to assist with the creation of a metal plate calibration file (a bumper
jump file). This feature has be implemented using a data resolution that doesn’t produce an
extraordinarily large data collection file. All of the User’s configuration settings are
automatically saved and the SIR-30 will automatically transition to Time mode at 150
Scans/Second, for the duration of the calibration. Upon completion (either a “Save” or
“Cancel”) of the calibration procedure, the User’s settings are restored.
2 Support for Windows 10. The SIR-30 application on startup now prompts the User for the
required administrator privileges required by Windows 10. An updated InstallShield 2018
and Visual Studio 2017 compiler has also been applied.
3 Various file handling improvements (Move & Copy dialogs were previously not
distinguishable from one another, now they are; in both English and Mandarin).
4 Additional error message support has been added to differentiate between an antenna
hardware communications error (code 561) and the case where an external laptop client is
misconfigured and is using an IPv4 network IP address setting that is not within the same IP
address range as the SIR-30’s factory default setting (code 562).
5 Fixed an issue where the User had turned off Auto Positioning, then was able to set the
Surface % to zero for a ground coupled antenna, a 50400S. This caused the antenna to be
treated as an air launched horn. In RADAN, Position Tracking (a.k.a H-Drift Processing)
was observed to be turned on. Position Tracking is no longer turned on for ground coupled
antennas.
Known Issues
1 Project file names containing a period (the OS file extension dot separator) should not be
used. An underscore or dash character should be used in place of the file system dot
separator.
Added/Changed Features
2 Improved protection against invalid GPS NEMA sentence producers. A GPS was found to
produce $GGA sentences which contained a valid “Quality Indicator” status (field 6), a
“good” HDOP (field 8) along with plenty of satellites (field 7), but then failed to output any
latitude and longitude data (fields 2-5). In such cases the HDOP in the UI will show a
"Satellite" icon of "Yellow" and display an HDOP of "0.0" as the $GPGGA NEMA sentence
data output is not reliable.
3 8 Channel changes to support splitting channels during copy or move operations. This
functionality must be paired with support in RADAN versions greater than 7.4.17.09140.
4 8 Channel changes to prevent noise/cross talk (visible as short diagonal bars in UI) when a
low frequency 3207 100 MHz antenna is used in conjunction with a variety mix of other
antennas.
Added/Changed Features
5 Improved GPS $GPGGA NEMA sentence parsing logic. It was discovered that some 3rd
party GPS devices return an HDOP value even though the "GPS Fix Quality" field is
invalid/zero. A check of the "GPS Fix Quality" field is now done before assuming any
HDOP, Latitude or Longitude field values are valid. This fixed a UI crash that would occur
during data collection (in this case, when driving out from under a GPS occluding overpass or
bridge).
6 Improved GPS DZG file output. Fixed an issue created in the previous release, 1.2.3.9. The
last character or two in a NEMA sentence (the checksum field) was sometimes truncated.
7 On 8 channel systems, data collection settings for channels 1-4 are now propagated over to
channels 5-8. This fixes an issue where UI settings like Scans/Unit (DZX <unitsPerScan>)
on channels 5-8 were not being updated if the User did not combined the two 4 channel
systems (8 channels) of data together via a "move" or "copy" operation.
Added/Changed Features
1 GPS/DZG changes to allow for larger *.DZG files (GPS output):
a. Extraneous “nulls” (non-ASCII) values written to the DZG file have been removed; therefore
there is now additional space for NEMA GGA sentences.
b. Maximum DZG file size has been increased from 16 MB to 32 MB.
Note: The SIR-30 requires only the NEMA GGA sentence and output of unnecessary NEMA
sentences will take away from the total *.DZG file space. Configure your GPS accordingly.
2 Custom Filters are now loaded and persist during Playback. Previously Custom Filter information
applied during data collection was lost during the playback process.
Added/Changed Features
3 Added REG4x_ALL batch file to support registration of COM interfaces on either 32 or 64 bit
Windows operating systems. The SIR-30 Maintenance Tool now uses the same batch file.
4 Added additional NEMA talker ID’s to support additional GGA messages from other devices. In
addition to $GPGGA, now GLONASS and Integrated Navigation devices are supported:
- “IN” for $INGGA, “GN” for $GNGGA and “GL” for $GLGGA.
Added/Changed Features
5 Point Mode “static stacking”. A fix was made for saving the stacked data.
6 UI button enhancement for “Display Gain” and “Start Scan”:
- The display gain value is shown on the gain up/down buttons during data collection.
- Maximum vehicle speed is shown on the “Start Scan” button in preview upon screen initialization.
Added/Changed Features
1 Remote Control SDK changes.
GPS (*.DZG) files are created in corresponding sequential parts or chunks if requested.
GPS (*.DZG) files are moved to an alternative storage server if requested.
Added/Changed Features
1 Automatic updates of SIR-30 firmware from an external laptop and directly on 4/8 channel
systems has been implemented. Upgrades are still launched and initiated via the SIR-30
Maintenance Tool (Software/Firmware->Update Firmware). The SIR-30 software automatically
moves to the “Versions” screen and waits for the User to press “Upgrade” to initiate the firmware
update sequence. Once started, the software automatically determines what updates are necessary
and takes it to completion. If a SIR-30 firmware module requires a power off, the SIR-30 must
be manually restarted and powered back on by the User, the update will continue automatically
from that point on if required.
a. When updating any of the GPR firmware modules there is a built-in 5 second pause
between updates. DSP firmware updates occur immediately.
b. If a “Version Info is unavailable” error occurs during an upgrade, then an automatic
power down and a subsequent re-attempt at firmware upgrade occurs (the User must
manually power on the SIR-30 so that the upgrade can automatically resume).
c. Screen prompts/error messages during the upgrade are provided in both English and
Chinese.
2 Default Setup. The User can select in “Recall Setup” a default setup that will be used (pre-
loaded) upon SIR-30 system startup.
3 RADAN integration:
a. Split Channel Files. When splitting the collected radar data files with GPS enabled, there
is now a DZG (the GPS log) file created for each channel split.
b. DZG (GPS) Files. The way scan numbers were recorded in the DZG file has been
changed in the case were the SIR-30 was “Paused” and “Resumed” during a data
collection. Pausing during data collection was affecting RADAN KML marker
locations.
4 Remote Control SDK
a. Upon startup of the SIR-30 UI; in some cases, the UI did not always go to the “Preview”
screen, but stayed on the “Geometry” configuration screen. This was in the situation
where the system was not shutdown successfully and the SIR-30 software restarted in
“standard” mode, not “remote control” mode.
b. If an alternate storage location is enabled via SetStorageServerLocation(), then the DZT,
DZX & DZG radar files are removed from the SIR-30 after being successful copied to
the alternate storage location.
Added/Changed Features
5 Fixed issue where User request for application of a Custom FIR Filter was enabled internally
even though the filter file did not exist. This caused an issue in RADAN (via the DZX file),
"...\MODEL SN0.csv contains an incorrect path," (it was blank). The FIR Filters UI button
"On/Off" is now in sync with the existence of a FIR file filter.
Note: Custom FIR Filter are applied on a per Channel basis, to the currently selected Channel
(or Channel #1 if none are selected), but not to ALL channels.
6 Rollup of previous changes in 1.2.3.2 & 1.2.3.1 that were unavailable in "1.2.3.0 (2015 May 7)".
Added/Changed Features
1 Additional DSP & Boot Loader updates to support future GPR board changes and updates.
2 A re-release of 1.2.3.0 for both 8 & 4 channel SIR-30’s. GSSI support has determined that this
level of SIR-30 UI Control software is necessary when running this most current firmware.
3 Note: when updating firmware… Update: DSP first, reboot, then Boot Loader and GPR firmware
Added/Changed Features
1 A DSP firmware update to support future GPR changes and updates.
2 Hard Drive icon for drives with 0-19% free space is now a green bar (previously gray).
Added/Changed Features
3 Fixed a channel synchronization / DSP initialization issue introduced in the previous release
1.2.3.0. When a single antenna on CH1 was connected to a 4 Channel system, the 2nd DSP board
(w/empty channels 3 & 4) would fail to display its firmware revision information on the
“Versions” screen.
Added/Changed Features
4 On 4 channel systems, channel groups 1-2 & 3-4, display improved start synchronization in data
collection when the survey wheel is already moving. This also fixes the display of double marks
that could occur under certain conditions when using the front panel marker.
5 Fixed intermittent missing and spurious “backup” cursor in distance mode.
6 Added “Survey Wheel” based stacking support via new UI button.
7 Completed support for 4 new advanced Remote Control SDK functions (SDK documentation
contains the details):
o SetChannelPositionOffset
o SetStorageServerLocation
o SetStorageServerFileSize
o SetRealTimeOutputMode
Added/Changed Features
8 Removed from the DZX, the “User defined Marks”.
9 Added 4 Remote SDK functions. These are currently only fully supported via the REM4XSRV
simulator (new simulator is included):
o SetChannelPositionOffset
o SetStorageServerLocation
o SetStorageServerFileSize
o SetRealTimeOutputMode
Added/Changed Features
1 Multilingual User Interface (MUI) support has been added. Currently the Chinese language
support is available. To obtain the fonts, one has to first install a new GSSI Win7 disk image onto
the SIR 30 unit. Note that changing UI language settings restarts the SIR-30 application.
2 DZX XML file support has been added. Legacy DZW files are updated/upgraded to DZX.
3 Color Table and XForm Table are now being saved as part of the setup.
4 Added User "caution" message when antennas cannot be identified/enumerated at system startup.
5 Remote Control SDK – is now able to work with 4 digit serial number (supporting the SIR30E).
Previously it was limited to 3 digits.
Bug Fix
1 Info Screen UI drawing - The Dielectric/CH1 text fields collided under certain screen resolutions.
Known Issues:
1 Use of Advanced Filters “Signal Floor” causes issues with User Marks and the new DZX XML
file format. Enabling “Signal Floor” is currently not recommended.
Added support to the new 52600S Antenna. Fixed support for 8 channel system.
Added support to the new 51600S Antenna. The UI was modified for easier operation and will now show
the maximal allowable speed in which you can start performing the scan. The scan rate was modified to
change into the maximal value when lowering the number of samples/scan.
Support for working in both imperial and metric modes under remote operation has been added.

Note: Delays have been increased intentionally that have an effect on the UI responsiveness. Please allow
up to 8 seconds for the system to respond. A waiting dialog will be added in the future. The delays do not
affect data collection.
Playback operations are not viable in this version
Sync Port capabilities enhanced – requires firmware updates.
Bi-static offset is allowed between Channel 1 and Channel 2.
In Bi-Static mode Transmitter is from the antenna on Channel 2 and the antenna on Channel 1 is
the receiver
In Dual mode the Transmitter is from the antenna on Channel 2 and both antennas on Ch1 and
Ch2 are receivers.
Updating GPR Control allows for temperature table calibration with version 1.0.7.1 software. If you
already have 1.0.7.1 software as per the configuration below no software change is necessary. However,
you should upgrade if you have 1.0.6.1 or earlier.
Auto positioning of 4105NR antennas has been adjusted. It should cover 95% or more of the cases.
Antenna should be positioned 18” off the ground during position calibration. However, it should work
anywhere between 12” and 24” off the ground. It should work between TRates of 100KHz to 730KHz.
Keep the SURFACE set to 10%.
Cancelling out of Recall Setup would crash SIR 30. This has been fixed.
Revises Firmware versions for GPR Control and GPR Antenna, improving (decreasing) the number of
duplicated scans. Previously approximately 4% of scans were duplicated in SW collection.
Revises Auto Position settings (still not fully working).
Version 1.0.4.9
Enables default filter settings when selecting antenna types.
Enables GPS when used in conjunction with GPR Control 165.
Still crashes frequently when switching between System Settings and Collect Setup.
Version 1.0.4.8
Maximum display rate is 200 scans/sec. This does not affect the data collection rate. Once the listed scan
rate exceeds 200 scans/sec we divide the number of scans to display by 2. Once the scan rate exceeds
400 scans/sec we divide the number of scans to display by 4 and so on.
Ex1. A listed scan rate of 250 will have a maximum display rate of 125 scans/sec.
Ex2:A listed scan rate of 400 will have a maximum display rate of 200 scans/sec.
Ex3:A listed scan rate of 404 will have a maximum display rate of 101 scans/sec.
While collecting in Distance/SW based mode it may appear that distance marks are improperly spaced or
missing. These marks are being saved to the output file. We are still trying to determine why they are
missing from the display.
Function Keys F1-F10 can be set up as user mark types. However, they do not always appear to be
registered. It is best to press the button until you see a mark and then release.
Currently you will need to perform all setup information for every antenna type manually. This includes
all filters, range, position, gain etc. The defaults for each antenna type will be added in a future release.
Expect it soon. Note: Auto position will get your antenna position close but you will need to set it back to
manual and adjust them up (reduce the position by a few ns).
By default all file sizes are limited to 5 GB per channel per file. Unless you are running into a file size
limit we recommend using the default. It can be changed under Max Units/File in the System Settings
dialog.
