How to calculate the required membrane area for Membrane Bioreactor?

Calculating the membrane area required for any project wastewater treatment plant, that
membrane bioreactor (MBR) plant involves several factors and may require engineering
calculations. Here’s a simplified approach:
1. Determine Flux Rate: First, you need to determine the desired flux rate for your MBR
system. This is typically measured in liters per square meter per hour (LMH). It depends
on the type of wastewater industry or domestic sewage, specific membrane type, fouling
characteristics, and treatment goals. Common flux rates for MBRs range from 10-25
LMH, and sewage we suggest flux rates design at 15LMH.
2. Calculate Daily Flow Rate: Given that your STP processes 50,000 liters per day
(50KLD), convert this to cubic meters per day (m³/day) by multiplying 1,000 (1 m³ =
1,000 liters).
3. Determine Required Membrane Area: Use the formula:
Membrane Area (m²) = Daily Flow Rate (m³/day) / Flux Rate (LMH)/20
Note: Consider flux in 15 LMH and 24 hours of operation per day, but MBR interval working,
normal setting 7-minutes working 1-minute relax, then consider as 20 hours working per
day.
For example,
Membrane Area (m²) = 50,000 / 15/20 = 166 m²≈180 m² (because our standard MBR
Element Membrane area with 10 m² or 20 m² per unit)
So, for a 50kld MBR plant with a flux rate of 15 LMH, you would need approximately 180
square meters of membrane area.

Keep in mind that this is a simplified calculation, and the actual membrane area required
can vary based on factors such as the specific MBR technology, wastewater characteristics,
operating conditions, and system design. It’s essential to consult with a qualified engineer or

What is mbr technology and why it
must be implemented in water
purification?
Membrane bioreactor or MBR technology is a wastewater remedy procedure that combines
an organic remedy manner with a membrane filtration gadget. The natural remedy
technique, commonly an activated sludge, removes organic count and nutrients from the
wastewater. The membrane filtration machine removes suspended solids, micro organism,
and viruses from the handled wastewater.
Hinada, we are the manufacturer of MBR Membrane, we can offer according to your project
requirement, Hinada can offer professional solution designation, sophisticated installation,
good training and efficient after-sales service according customer’s requirements

MBR technology has several benefits over conventional wastewater remedy structures,
which include:
High-great effluent: The handled wastewater from an MBR machine is of a completely
excessive excellent, with shallow tiers of suspended solids, microorganisms, and viruses.
This makes it suitable for a vast range of reuse packages, which include irrigation, business
method water, and drinking water.
Compact footprint: MBR systems are usually plenty extra compact than conventional
wastewater treatment systems because they do now not require a separate secondary
clarifier. This makes them ideal for use in city regions with restrained areas.
Reduced sludge production: MBR systems produce appreciably much less than
conventional wastewater remedy structures. This reduces the price of sludge disposal and
enables to protect the surroundings.
Here are some of the particular blessings of MBR generation for water purification:
High elimination performance: MBRs can eliminate a wide range of contaminants from
water, such as microorganisms, viruses, protozoa, suspended solids, vitamins, and organic
rely on.

Low electricity intake: MBRs may be operated at low power charges, making them a cost-
powerful alternative for water purification.
Simple operation and maintenance: MBRs are relatively clean to perform and keep,
making them a terrific choice for small and medium-sized water treatment vegetation.
Flexibility: MBRs may treat various water sources, including surface water, groundwater,
and wastewater.
MBR technology is a promising new technology for water purification. It offers many
advantages over conventional methods, such as highly effective water removal, low energy
consumption, ease of operation and maintenance, and flexibility. As technology advances,
MBR will likely play an increasingly important role in water treatment worldwide.

Hydrophilicity modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes have various
advantages, for example, good mechanical strength, strong protein retention, extensive
solvent compatibility, and excellent coloring ability. PVDF membrane is ideal for wastewater
and clean water filtration, its has over 90% market share in this water filtration field.

The PVDF membrane with a pore size of 0.4 μm, 0.1μm, 0.03-0.06μm widely in the market,
can be used for most immunoblots and is recommended for proteins or bacteria remove or
turbidity low down with a molecular weight less than 20 kDa. For drinking water, it’s better
choose the pore size less than 0.1μm, and wastewater filtration pore size above 0.1μm is
acceptable.
We offer two types of PVDF (Polyvinylidene Difluoride) membranes, optimized for a specific
wastewater and drinking water application, our PVDF membrane pore size is: between 0.03
—0.06μm.
Bacteria, viruses, and particulates including colloids has bigger diameter, like
cryptosporidium and Giardia and colloform diameter between 0.5–5μm, which cannot pass
through the UF pores.

ultrafiltration (UF) can remove particulate and colloidal matters bigger than the pore size of
the membrane and usually produce a filtrate free of turbidity and bacteria. These have been
widely used to produce drinking water from river, lake, and underground water
As long as the UF pores size less than 0.1μm, then most of the bateria, virus and particles
can be removed, SDI of output clean water: ≤ 2.5
