Assignment

MA-121 (2021-2022)
Unit 4
Probability and Statistics

1. A pair of dice is tossed twice. Find the probability of scoring 7 points (a) once, (b) at
least one (c) twice. (Answer: a)=5/18, b)=11/36, c)=1/36)
2. The odd that a book will be reviewed favourably by three independent critics are 5 to
2, 4 to 3 and 3 to 4. What in the probability that of the three reviews, a majority will be
favourable. (Answer: 209/343)
3. There are three bags, first containing 1 white, 2 red, 3 green balls; second 2 white, 3
red, 1 green balls and third 3 white, 1 red, 2 green balls. Two balls are drawn from a
bag chosen at random. These are found to be one white and one red. Find the probability
that the balls so drawn come from the second bag. (Answer: 6/11)
4. A die is tossed thrice. A success is getting 1 or 6 on a toss. Find the mean and variance
of the number of successes. (Answer: mean=1, vaiance=2/3)
5. X is a continuous random variable with probability density function given by
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑘𝑥, 0 ≤ 𝑥 < 2
= 2𝑘, 2 ≤ 𝑥 < 4
= −𝑘𝑥 − 6𝑘, 4 ≤ 𝑥 < 6
6. Find k and mean value of k. (Answer: k=1/8, mean=3)
7. In sampling a large number of parts manufactured by a machine, the mean number of
defective in a sample of 20 is 2. Out of 1000 such samples, how many would be
expected to contain at least 3 defective parts. (Answer: 323)
8. If the probability of a bad reaction from a certain injection is 0.001, determine the
chance that out of 2000 individuals more that two will get a bad reaction. (Answer:
0.32)
9. In a test on 2000 electric bulbs, it was found that the life of a particular make, was
normally distributed with an average life of 2040 hours and s.d. of 60 hours. Estimate
the number of bulbs likely to burn for (a) more than 2150 hours, (b) less than 1950
hours and (c) more than 1920 hours and but less than 2160 hours. (Answer: 1909)
