2. Chandler was given $75 for a birthday present. This present, along with earnings from a
summer job, is being set aside for a mountain bike. The job pays $6 per hour, and the bike costs
$345. To be able to buy the bike, how many hours does Chandler need to work?
3. Solve for x:
a. 2(x – 3) = 4
b. -3(2x + 1) = 5
c. a(bx + c) = d
4. Simplify the expression k – 2(k – (2 – k)) – 2 as much as possible. Your final answers should not
have parentheses.
5. Solve for x:
a. 16x + 7x = 46
b. 12x – 6x = 3
c. -3x + 25 + x + 21 = 2
d. ax + bx = 10

7. The sum of four consecutive integers is 2174. What are the integers.
8. Randy and Sandy had a total of 20 books between them. After Sandy loses three by leaving
them on the bus, and some birthday gifts double Randy’s collection, their total increases to 30
books. Write an equation to represent this scenario and solve it to find how many books each
had before these changes.
9. Solve for x:
a. 4 – (x + 3) = 8 – 5(2x – 3)
b. x – 2(3 – x) = 2x + 3(1 – x)
10. Alden paid to have some programs printed for the football game last weekend. The printing
cost per program was 54 cents, and the plan was to sell them for 75 cents each. Poor weather
kept many fans away from the game, however, so unlucky Alden was left with 100 unsold
copies, and lost $12 on the venture. How many programs did Alden have printed?
11. Pat bought several pens at Walgreen’s, for 60 cents each. Spending the same amount of money
at the Bookstore, Pat then bought some pens that cost 80 cents each. In all 42 pens were
bought. Write an solve an equation to find how many pens Pat bought at the bookstore.
12. So that it will be handy for paying tolls and parking meters, Lee puts pocket change (dimes and
quarters only) into a cup in his car. There are currently 102 coins in the cup, and their monetary
values is $17.10. Write one equation to represent this scenario and solve it to find how many of
the coins are dimes.
14. Graph on a number line the intervals described below and then represent the statements in
terms of x in inequality notation.
a. All number that are greater than 1 or less than -3.
b. All numbers that are at least -5 and no more than 4.
c. All numbers that are at most -11 or greater than 0.
16. Solve the inequality 3 – x > 5 using only the operations of addition and subtraction. Is x = 0 a
solution to the inequality?
17. Solve for x and graph the solution set on a real number line.
a. -9 < 21 + 2x
b. 2x – 3 < 4x + 5
c. 4(x – 2) > 5(x – 3)
18. . The chess club is selling chess sets for $9 each to raise money to attend the regional
tournament. The club needs to sell at least 100 chess sets in order to fund the trip. The chart
below shows the number of chess sets sold by each member so far.
a. Write and solve an inequality to find the number x of additional chess sets the club
needs to sell in order to meet their goal of selling at least 100 chess sets.
b. If the chess set sale raises more than $1000, it will donate the extra amount that
exceeds $1000 to charity. Write and solve an inequality that determines the number of
chess sets x that need to be sold so the club can donate to the charity.
19. Solve for x and graph the solution set on a real number line.
a. 14 < -3x + 4 < 22
b. 5n + 2 > -18 or -3(n + 4) > 21
20. Joseph spends more than 25 hours per week but at most 32 hours per week working his part-
time job.
a. Write an inequality that show how much time he works over 4 weeks.
c. Suppose Joseph can make between $9 and $12 per hour on a particular day. If he works
at least 5 hours but less than 8 hours in one day, then write an inequality to show the
minimum and maximum amount of money he could earn that day. Show or explain
your work.
21. On a number line, how far is each of the following numbers from 5?
