This exercise is a multiple-choice quiz. For each question, only one of the four answers given is correct. A correct

Exercise 2 : (6 points)

We want to realize a gate as indicated above. This gate is made up of two leaves. Each leaf is 2 meters wide.

Part A : Modeling of the upper part of the gate.


We assume that the shape of the upper edge of the right leaf is given by the curve (C) of the function f defined on the interval

Part B : Finding the area of one leaf of the gate.


Each leaf consists of a metal plate. We want to calculate the area of each of the plates, knowing that the lower edge of the leaf is
located at a height of 0.05 m from the ground.

Partie C : Calculation of the total area of the boards.

Now, we want to make a gate of the same shape but using separate rectangular boards of width 0.12 m, spaced of 0.05 m. For the
right leaf, the upper left corner of each board is located on the upper edge of the leaf, meaning on the curve (C) (see the figure
above) and the bottom of each board is located at a height of 0.05 m from the ground. The boards are numbered starting from 0
(thus the first board is numbered 0, the second board is numbered 1, etc…).

1. Show that the area 𝐴(𝑘) in m2 of the board numbered k is given by 𝐴(𝑘) = (𝑓(0.17𝑘) − 0.05) × 0.12.
2. Prove that 12 boards are needed to build the right leaf of the gate.
3. Let 𝑆 be the total sum of the areas of all the boards composing the right leaf of the gate. The following table gives you the
values of 𝑓(0.17𝑘) for different values of 𝑘.

1. Les bords gauches des planches sont situés tous les 0,12 + 0,05 = 0,17 m;
donc le bord gauche de la planche numéro 𝑘 est situé à l’abscisse 0,17 × 𝑘.
L’ordonnée du point d’abscisse 0,17𝑘 sur la courbe est 𝑓(0,17𝑘) ;
mais comme chaque planche est située à une hauteur de 0,05 m du sol, alors la
