Ponderosa Ponderings
Although we still have three months of school left, its not too early to celebrate some successes! Recently, we had 4 staff members from Ponderosa nominated for Thompson Education Foundations Educator of the Year: Sandi Bonawitz, 1st grade teacher; Amy Pett, 2nd grade teacher; Susan Harding, music teacher, and Sheri Fender, secretary. From these wonderful staff members, Susan Harding was selected for the Thompson Education Foundations Educator of the Year! This year, we were also awarded a $2000 grant for our Health and Wellness Program. This grant is intended to promote healthy, life-choices with exercise and nutrition. Our Heart Healthy Hall Hop was once again a tremendous success with the emphasis on movement and healthy treats. Ponderosa will host a bike rodeo this spring to share bike safety tips as well as promoting exercise with our students. Finally, we are excited about the upcoming TCAPs (state assessments). Our students and our staff have been working diligently to ensure that our students have been learning. Our data collected for our students in grades 3 through 5 show significant growth and we cant wait to see how our students perform on the state assessment. For us, this will be a celebration of learning. Our students in grades pre-K through 2 also show terrific growth and we know that they are laying the foundation for next years learning. I am excited about what we can accomplish with the time remaining in our school year! Sincerely, Lamb Caro

Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (formerly CSAP)

The (TCAP) is Colorados standards-based assessment designed to provide a picture of student performance to schools, districts, educators, parents and the community. The primary purpose of the assessment program is to determine the level at which Colorado students meet the Colorado Model Content Standards in the content areas assessed. The TCAP is collaboratively developed by the Colorado Department of Education, the Colorado teaching community and CTB/McGraw-Hill. The 2012 TCAP calendar is attached. The TCAP is important to us because it shares with us important information about what your child has learned throughout the school year and provides valuable information for us to reflect on. Please keep the dates in mind as you plan your Spring travels!

Colorado Basic Literacy Assessment Days

As a reminder, due to the assessment requirements of the Colorado Basic Literacy Act, students in kindergarten through 5th grade will only attend school during their scheduled assessment time on Monday, April 30th and Tuesday, May 1st. More information will be coming home at the end of March.

Celebrations
Congratulations to the recipient of the Elementary Educator of the Year, Susan Harding! Susan has been a music teacher in Thompson School District for 24 years, and currently teaches at Ponderosa and Mary Blair Elementary Schools. Other nominees from Ponderosa included: Amy Pett, 2nd Grade Teacher Sandi Bonawitz, Kindergarten Teacher Sheri Fender, Secretary

Schools on the Move Challenge

The Schools on the Move Challenge started at the beginning of February. This program is designed to help increase the amount of exercise students, teachers and school staff get each day and each week. Research shows that daily exercise (at least 60 minutes most days) helps reduce the risk of health problems, helps kids to get better grades, to focus in class, and to have better memory skills. We hope that you have had an opportunity to participate with your child! The Challenge ended on Feb. 29th.
