Introduction:
• All computers and computer like devices have an operating systems,
including your laptop, tablet, desktop, smartphones.
• Windows is operating system from Microsoft company, it is
therefore, a system program that controls, coordinates and
manipulates overall desktop publishing operations.
• It serves as an interface between the hardware and other software on
the computer system
• Therefore, the aims of this course is to enables the novice to
understand the various stages while operating a computer.

Windows operating system:
• Windows is operating system: is an example of system software which
used to controls and manages computer by translating instructions in
to a language the hardware can understand.
• It links all the different parts of your computer system together
• O.S, refers to the main program which the computer uses to function
properly.
• It also serves as a link between the user and the program in a
computer.
• It is also called GUI, because it is uses pictures, (Icons) to help the
user communicate with computer

Types of windows operating system:
• Microsoft released the first version of Windows in the mid-1980s.
There have been many versions of Windows since then, like
• Unix
• Linux
• windows 96
• Windows 98
• Windows 2000
• windows XP
• Windows Vista, 2007
• Windows 7, 2009
• Windows 8, 2012
• Windows 10 (released in 2015)

Features of windows operating system:
• Program Manager: it serves as a manager to other programs since it
controls, coordinates and manipulates their processing
• Multi tasking Package: with help of windows a user can make use
two or more package at the same time, e.g. working in excel and
engaged in browsing
• Interacting Package: it ensure a flow of communication between a
user and computer
• It manages hardware errors and lost of data
• It coordinates and manipulates computer hardware such as printers,
keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Procedure on how to turn on, and shut down computer:

Procedure on how to turn-on computer:


1.Step 1: switch on the socket to supply the power to the computer
2.Step 2: Push or press on the power button on the CPU.
3.step 3: press the power button on the Monitor
4.Step 3: Now you need to log in, once it's turned on it may go straight
to the desktop:

How to shut down a computer:

1.Click on the 'Start' button.


2.Click on the 'Shut down' button.
3.Wait for the screen to turn blank.
4.Switch off the monitor.
5.Switch off the electricity.

Computer Booting:

• Booting: means the process of putting on the computer


Types of Booting:
• Cold Booting: is the process of putting on the computer for the first
time of the day
• Warm Booting: is the process of re-starting computer due to one
reason or the other.

Controlling windows via the mouse:

• Mouse: is a small, hand held device that is used to control the pointer
on the screen.
There are six main mouse action such as:
• Point
• Right click
• Double click
• Triple click
• Drag
• scroll

Controlling windows via the keyboard:
Keyboard: is used to enter data and to issue commands to the computer
Keys on the keyboard:
• Functional Keys: the twelve keys located across the top of the
keyboard that are labelled F1-F12; they performed specific tasks
depending on the software you are using.
• Controls Keys: are shift, ctrl and Alt. they are used in combination
with other keys to issue commands
• Keyboard shortcuts: are key combinations(usually using control
keys) that can be used to activate certain commands as an alternative
to using the mouse

• Ctrl+A for Selecting All
• Ctrl+B for Bold
• Ctrl+C for Copy
• Ctrl+V for Paste
• Ctrl+S for Save
• Ctrl+x for Cut
• Ctrl+P for Print
• Ctrl+ R for align right
• Ctrl+L for align left

What Windows Does?

• Windows: is define as an environment that enables you to access the


information on the computer
• Windows: refers to a rectangular area of the screen, within which you
may view program folders, files, or display content such as documents
spreadsheet and graphic images.
• A window: can occupy part of the screen, can be maximized to fill the
screen or can be minimized, so that it is longer visible but remains
active and easily re-accessed.

Title Bar:
• The top line of the window is called the title bar, it displays the name
of the corresponding program or folder. You can move an open
window to a different part of the screen by dragging it.

• Minimizes: on the left, keeps your
program open, but reduces it to a
rectangular icon on the task bar
• Restore/maximizes in the middle,
reduces the size of a full screen

• Close on the right, closes the the

Menu Bar:
• A menu bar is a row below the title bar, if you click a word on the
menu bar, a menu of additional choices will appears.an arrow to the
right of a menu option indicates that it has a submenu.

Start Menu Batton:
In the lower left-hand corner of the windows screen is the start button, when
you click on the button a menu will appear, this menu gives you access to all
the different parts and functions of the computer.

• The dialogue box will appear
• On the dialogue box choose, the command called NEW
• And locate the Folder
