Chapter -- Metals and non metals and ionic bonding

ASSIGNMENT 1

Name of the concept--- Physical properties of metals and non metals and bonding Date of issue---

Q1. Metals are said to electropositive. Why?

Q2. Why are silver, gold and platinum are found in free state in nature? Q3. Write the name
of two metals which are best conductors of electricity.
Q4. Name the Non metal which is used in making electrodes. Due to which property it is
used as electrodes?
Q5. Show the formation of the following molecules by electron dot method
MgO, MgCl2, CaCl2, AlCl3, Na20, O2, N2, H2O, CO2
Q6. How do you classify elements into metals and non metals on the basis of their electronic
configuration? Choose metals and Non metals out of the following :
23Al11, 19 B9, 24 C12, 31D15, 35 E 17
What type of bond will be formed if
(a)A combines with B (b) A combines with E (C) C combines with E (d) D
combines with E

Name of the concept--- Chemical properties of metals and non metals

Assignment No—2

Q1. A silvery white metal kept under kerosene. When taken out and put in water it reacts vigorously.
How this solution behaves towards litmus? Identify the metal and the products formed when metals
react with water. Write the balanced chemical equation.

Q2. Account for the following:

(a) Aluminium is more reactive than iron. But its corrosion is less than iron.

(b) Hydrogen gas is not evolved when zinc metal reacts with dilute HNO3

(c) Carbon is not used for reducing aluminium from aluminium oxide.

Q3. On placing a piece of zinc metal in a solution of mercuric chloride, it acquires a shining silvery
surface but when it is placed in a solution of magnesium sulphate no change is observed. Explain.

Q4.10 ml of freshly prepared iron sulphate was taken in each of four test tubes. Strips of copper,
iron, zinc and Aluminum was introduced, each metal in a different test tube. A residue was obtained
in them. Which of these metals will form the precipitates?
Q5. An element E combines with O2 to form an oxide an oxide E2O, Which is a good conductor of
electricity? Answer the following:

Q6. A metal A, which is used in thermit process, when heated with oxygen gives an oxide B, which is
amphoteric in nature. Identify A and B. Write down the reactions of oxide B with HCl and NaOH.

Assignment No—3

Chapter -- Metals and non metals Name of the concept--- metallurgy

Q1.A is an element which is amongst Cu, Zn, Al, and Fe. It shows the following properties:

(a) One of its ore is rich in A2O3

(b) A2O3 is not affected by water.

(c) It forms two chlorides ACl2 and ACl3

Q2. Explain how the following metals are obtained from their compounds by the reduction process :

(a) Metal M which is in the middle of the reactive series.

(b) Metal N which is high up in the reactivity series Give one example of each type.

Q3. During extraction of metals, electrolytic refining is used to obtain the pure metals.

(i) Which material will be used as anode and cathode for refining of silver metal by this
process?

(ii) Suggest a suitable electrolyte also.

(iii) In the electrolytic cell, where do we get pure silver after passing electric current?

Q4. A metal M is found in the nature as MCO3. It is used in galvanizing iron articles. Name the metal.

Q5Give reasons for the following :

(i)Silver and copper lose their shine when they are exposed to air. Name the substance formed on
their surface in each case.
(ii)Tarnished copper vessels are cleaned with tamarind juice.

(iii) Aluminium is more reactive than iron yet there is less corrosion of aluminium as compared to
iron when both are exposed in air.

Q6 Write chemical equations for the reactions taking place when

(i) Zinc carbonate is calcined.

(ii)Cinnabar is heated in the air.

(iii) Manganese dioxide is heated with aluminium powder.
