Multimedia Data Processing - Level 100

Second Continuous Assessment Examination

Instructions:

 This paper consists of TWO sections.

 Answer ALL questions in Section A and ANY TWO questions from Section B.
 Show all your working clearly and provide explanations where required.
 The total marks for this paper are 30.
 Time allowed: 1 hour 30 minutes.

Section A (18 Marks) - Answer ALL Questions

Question 1 (6 Marks)

(a) Define the term "multimedia data". Provide three distinct examples of multimedia data types.

(b) Briefly explain the difference between analog and digital data. Why is digital representation
preferred for multimedia data processing?

(c) What is meant by "sampling" and "quantization" in the context of digitizing analog signals like
audio? Briefly describe the role of each process.

Question 2 (6 Marks)

(a) Explain the concept of "resolution" in the context of digital images. How does image
resolution affect the quality and file size of an image?

(b) What are the primary color models used in digital imaging? Briefly describe the purpose and
components of one of these models (e.g., RGB or CMYK).

(c) Differentiate between "lossy" and "lossless" compression techniques for multimedia data.
Give one common example of each type of compression.

Question 3 (6 Marks)

(a) Define the term "frame rate" in digital video. How does frame rate influence the perceived
smoothness of motion in a video?

(b) What is the role of "codecs" in multimedia data processing? Give one example of a video
codec and one example of an audio codec.

(c) Briefly explain the concept of "streaming" multimedia data. How does it differ from
downloading the entire file before playback?

Section B (12 Marks) - Answer ANY TWO Questions

Question 4 (6 Marks)

(a) Describe the steps involved in capturing and digitizing a simple audio signal.

(b) Explain the concept of "bit depth" in digital audio. How does bit depth affect the dynamic
range and quality of the audio?

Question 5 (6 Marks)

(a) Explain the difference between "raster" and "vector" graphics. What are the advantages and
disadvantages of each type?

(b) Describe a common image editing operation (e.g., resizing, cropping, color adjustment) and
briefly explain how it manipulates the digital image data.

Question 6 (6 Marks)

(a) Explain the concept of "interlaced" and "progressive" scanning in video. Which method
generally provides a better viewing experience for fast-motion content and why?

(b) Briefly describe the purpose of metadata in multimedia files. Give two examples of metadata
that might be associated with a digital photograph.

Question 7 (6 Marks)

(a) Discuss some of the challenges and considerations involved in storing and transmitting large
multimedia files efficiently.

(b) Briefly explain the concept of "watermarking" in multimedia data. What are some potential
applications of watermarking?
