B1 - Graphing Functions - UA

This document outlines an activity focused on graphing functions, specifically analyzing real-world situations such as throwing a ball and tracking stock value. It includes tasks that require students to model these situations using mathematical functions, graph them, and interpret various aspects of the graphs. The activity aims to develop mathematical practices such as problem-solving, reasoning, and modeling real-world scenarios.

Unit Activity

Unit: Graphing Functions

This activity will help you meet these educational goals:
Mathematical Practices—You will make sense of problems and solve them, reason abstractly
and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, use
mathematics to model real-world situations, look for and make use of structure, and look for
and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Introduction
In this unit, you learned how to create, use, and graph functions. In this activity, you will
analyze and compare real-world situations by modeling them as functions.

Directions and Analysis

Task 1: Throwing a Ball

Cecily is on her roof and wants to throw a ball straight up in the air and figure out how long it
will take to reach the ground. The function that models an object falling to the ground is
f(x) = -32x2 + vx + d. In this function, x is time, v is the initial (vertical) velocity in feet per
second, and d is the initial distance above the ground in feet. If v is positive, then the initial
velocity is upward. If v is negative, the initial velocity is downward.

a. Write the function if Cecily releases the ball 40 feet above the ground at a velocity of 64
feet per second, and then graph it using the Edmentum Graphing Tool. Capture a
screenshot of your graph and paste it below.

Type your response here:

b. What does the maximum represent, and what is it?

Type your response here:

c. What does the y-intercept represent, and what is it?

Type your response here:

d. What do the x-intercepts represent, and what are they? Are they both useful?

Type your response here:

e. How long will it take for the ball to hit the ground?

Type your response here:

f. The force of gravity is different on Mars than on Earth. The function of the same situation
on Mars would be represented by the function shown below. On which planet would the
ball go highest? About how high would it go?

Task 2: Stock Value

Trevor is tracking the value of a stock he invested in over the course of one business day (8
hours). The value of the stock can be found be adding these two functions, where t
represents time in hours:
f(t) = 12(1.20)t
g(t) = -4.5t

a. Add the two functions and call the resulting function v(t).

Type your response here:

b. Graph the function you found in part a using the Edmentum Graphing Tool. Adjust the
scale so that both axes start at 0 and continue far enough to view the polynomial
correctly.

Type your response here:

c. Using the graph, what was the initial value of the stock?

3
Type your response here:

d. About what was the final value of the stock for the day?

Type your response here:

e. Does the value of the stock increase or decrease from where it started the day? By about
how much?

Type your response here:

f. About when was the value of the stock at its lowest, and what was its value?

Type your response here:
