Important
1. Please note that plagiarism is treated as a serious offence and therefore the work you produce must be
individual and original.
2. All sources of information must be referenced using “Harvard Referencing” where a reference
list/Bibliography should be included at the end of the assignment. (You may refer the information
given in http://libweb.anglia.ac.uk/referencing/harvard.htm).
3. Please note that the submission date given for the assignment (14 days after the date of covering relevant
theory parts) is the final date that you can submit the assignment. If the given submission date is a
public holiday, the redefined submission deadline will be at 13:00 hr of the immediately following
working day. Late submissions will be graded lower.
4. All submissions should be done through the submission link given in Moodle.
5. Assignments returned to students for corrections must be re-submitted within 10 days
6. Failure to re-submit the previously marked assignment with the re-submitted assignment will mean
that results cannot be released for the respective unit.
Plagiarism
Although research and discussion form an essential part of the assignment, deliberate copying of
the work of others or unacknowledged copying from printed or electronic sources is NOT permitted.
Disciplinary actions will be taken against those who are found guilty of plagiarism. Signing of this

INTRODUCTION
In many urban areas, flooding has become an increasingly serious issue, often exacerbated by
unplanned land use changes and extreme rainfall events. Designing hydraulic structures without
considering these and possible future variations can result in inadequate capacity to manage peak
flows. One of the most straightforward techniques for estimating peak runoff in urban catchments
is the Rational Method. This method establishes a direct relationship between rainfall intensity
and key watershed characteristics—such as area, land use, and slope—to determine peak flood
discharge. However, its application is limited to small watersheds, making it unsuitable for large-
scale flood predictions.
WORKING PROBLEM
Estimate the peak discharge with a 10-year return period at a road-stream crossing with the
following catchment characteristics.
Upstream catchment area: 1.12 km2
Length of the main channel: 2.32 km
Slope of the main channel: 0.0078
Average watershed slope = 3.2%
Potential watershed storage = 4.29 in
( )
Runoff Coefficient = 0.6 +
1) Use the above data to estimate the time of concentration by the Kirpich Method, Soil
Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS CN) method, and the Irrigation Department
Equation.
2) Fill in the missing data and perform the consistency check for the given rainfall data at
Meteorological Station 1.
3) Develop the intensity-duration relationship for a 10-year return period using the preprocessed
rainfall data set. Use the Weibull distribution functions to estimate rainfall intensities in your
calculations.
4) Design the size of a box culvert using Manning’s Equation (with suitable freeboard). Assume
reasonable values for any data not given. Clearly state such assumptions made in the report.
5) As a precautionary measure for future climate and land use changes, an expert in the field
suggests increasing the return period of the design to 25 years. Considering the conflicting
constraints of a hydrological design, write the pros and cons of this recommendation.
6) Calculations completed during each practical session must be uploaded to Moodle at the end
of the class.
Divide your assignment into clearly defined and numbered sections. All figures and tables should
be numbered with proper captions. Figure captions are placed below the figures, while table
captions must be placed above the tables. The text must include a reference to each figure or
table before they are placed.
The assignment should be a single PDF file. The file name should be 220***X_CA2.PDF, where
220***X is your registration number.
All reports should be uploaded to Moodle by 10:00 pm on Sunday, 23rd of March 2025.
Submissions through email will NOT be accepted.
