Assignment 2025

The document outlines a home assignment for a Dynamics of Machinery course, detailing various questions related to mechanisms and linkages for different groups of students. Group 1 focuses on quick-return mechanisms and geared linkages, Group 2 on static force analysis and free-body diagrams, Group 3 on slider-crank mechanisms and four-bar linkages, and Group 4 on balance conditions in engines. Students are instructed to select specific questions based on their group assignments.

Dynamics of Machinery

Home assignment 1
Group 1 (Mechanical Engineering, select any 2 questions. Automobile, do all questions)
Q1. Determine the required input torque for static equilibrium of the quick-return mechanism
shown in Figure 1. Force on the slider has a magnitude of 1000 N. Angle equals 105°.

Figure 1
Figure 3

Q2. Determine the required input torque for static equilibrium of the mechanism shown in Figure
2. Force on the slider is along horizontal direction.

Figure 2

Q3. Figure 3 shows a geared five-bar linkage, with the larger gear fixed to the frame and the smaller
gear attached to link 2. The gears are spur gears with a pressure angle of 20° and pitch diameters
of 150 mm and 100 mm. A force F4 of 1 kN is applied as shown at the midpoint of member 4.
Determine the required torque T1 for static equilibrium.
Group 2 Do any one questions. For all students
Q1. In the given figure 4, write the equilibrium equations for each moving member obtained
carrying out static force analysis of the following linkage. The dimensions are in mm and n is your
class serial number. Take n as your class roll number.
𝜃 = (5𝑛)°

𝜃 = (5𝑛)°

Q2. The figure 5 shows a four-bar linkage with external forces applied at points B and C. Draw a
free-body diagram of each link, and show all the forces acting on each. Find the torque that must
be applied to link 2 to maintain static equilibrium at the posture shown. (n is the class roll number)
RAO2 = 10.16 cm, RCA = 34.3 cm, RO4O2 = 34.3 cm, RCO4 = 24.4 cm, RDO4 = 17.8 cm, RBA = 34.3,
and RBC = 20.3 cm.
Group 3: Do any two questions. Only for Mechanical students.
Q1. The crank of the slider-crank mechanism of given figure 6 has an instantaneous angular
velocity of 10 rad/s clockwise and an angular acceleration of 200 rad/s2 clockwise. Information
related to acceleration is given in the figure. The connecting rod has a mass of 15 kg and a mass
moment of inertia of 7500 kg.mm2 about its centre of mass, G2. The slider has a mass of 8 kg. The
crank has a moment of inertia of 4000 kg.mm2 about its stationary centre of mass G1 (n is class
serial number)
F=100 N
𝜃 = (5𝑛)°

Q2. The four-bar linkage of Figure 7a has a constant input angular velocity counterclockwise. The
acceleration polygon is shown in figure 7b. The masses of coupler link 2 and follower link 3 are 1.0 kg and
0.6 kg, respectively, and the moments of inertia about the centres of mass are 700 kg-mm2 and 500 kg-mm2
respectively. Determine all bearing forces and instantaneous torque.

Q3. The four-bar linkage of Figure 8 has a constant input angular velocity 𝜔 = 200 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 clockwise.
Follower link 3 weighs 0.4 kg and has a mass moment of inertia about its centre of mass 𝐺3 , equal to 0.0003
kg-m2. Coupler link 2 weighs 0.5 kg and has a mass moment of inertia about centre of mass 𝐺2 , equal to
0.0034 kg-m2. Determine all bearing forces and instantaneous input torque. The acceleration analysis gives

𝒂𝐺2 = 876.3∠298𝑜 𝑚/𝑠 2 ,

𝜶2 = 2670 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 2 ccw,

𝒂𝐺3 = 370.8∠294𝑜 𝑚/𝑠 2 ,

𝜶3 = 6940 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 2 cw.

Group 4: for all students.

Q1. Examine the balance conditions, both shaking force and shaking moment, as they apply to the
four-cylinder, in-line engine shown in Figure 9.
Q2. Examine the balance conditions, both shaking force and shaking moment, as they apply
to the six-cylinder, in-line engine shown in Figure 10.
Q3. The four-cylinder radial engine shown in Figure 11 is an excellent engine from the point of
view of dynamic balance. Show that the engine can be balanced by means of a single rotating
counterweight mounted on the crankshaft, and determine the location and magnitude of such a
counterweight. The crank length is r, the connecting rod lengths all equal to l, and the reciprocating
masses all equal m. The rotating masses are balanced, and all four cylinders lie in a single
transverse plane.
