QUESTION 1 [9 Marks]
Diagnostic tests of medical conditions can have several types of results. The test
result can be positive or negative, whether or not a patient has the condition.
Consider a random sample of 200 patients, some of whom have a medical condition
and some of whom do not. Results of a new diagnostic test for the condition are
shown in Table 1.
QUESTION 2 [8 Marks]
Researchers claim that a new treatment for chronic bronchitis is 80% effective in
reducing symptoms. If the new treatment is given to 15 patients suffering from
bronchitis,
2.1 (2 Marks) what is the probability that the treatment is effective in 13 patients?
2.2 (3 Marks) what is the probability that the treatment is effective in at most
12 patients?
2.3 (3 Marks) how many patients are expected not to have reduced symptoms
and what is the standard deviation?

In order to compare the levels of mercury concentration in two brands of canned
tuna, mercury concentration is measured on 45 cans of each brand. A hypothesis
test was carried out and the R output for the test is given below.
