SOLID MENSURATION 1

LESSON 5: CIRCLES

A circle is a set of points equidistant from a given point. The radius of a circle, 𝑟, is the
distance from the center of the circle to the circle. A circle's size depends only on its radius.

Important terms related to the circles:

1. Radius (𝑟) – a line segment that connects the center and any point on the circle.
2. Chord – a line segment that connects any two points on the circle.
3. Diameter (𝑑) – a chord that passes through the center of the circle. The length of the
diagonal is twice of the radius.
4. Circumference (𝐶) – the distance around the circle.
5. Secant – a line that passes through the circle.
6. Tangent – a line that intersect the circle at exactly one point.

Formula:
Circumference of Circle: Area of Circle:

"# $% !
𝐶 = 2𝜋𝑟 = 𝜋𝑑 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 ! = !
= &

where: 𝑟 = radius 𝑑 = diameter

Practice Exercise:
1. What is the area and circumference of a circle if its radius is 6 meters?

2. Find the circumference and area of the circle if the diameter is 10 ft?
SOLID MENSURATION 2
3. The square is circumscribed by a circle. If the area of the square is 25 sq. cm, find the
area of the circle.

4. A circle is inscribed in a square. If the diagonal of the square is 10 m, find the

circumference of the circle.

5. The square is circumscribed by a circle. If the area of the circle is 15 square meters, fine
the area of the square.

6. The minute hand on a clock is 25 cm long. How far does the tip of the hand move in 20
minutes?

DIRECTIONS: Solve the following problems. Write your solutions on the space provided after
each problem and box your final answer. Answer without solution means wrong.
Pointing System: 3 pts – Correct answer with correct unit
1 pt – Correct digit in answer but incorrect unit
0.5 pt – Consideration (incorrect answer but at least tried)

second. How many seconds did it take him to run around the track?

C. A gardener is hired to cut the grass in the field. She cuts the grass at an average
rate of 40 square meters per minute. How many hours will she take to finish the
entire field?
