THERMO FLUIDS – II

ASSIGNMENT 1
UNIT-II (GAS POWER CYCLES)
1. An engine working on the Otto cycle is supplied with air at 0.1 MPa, 35 oC. The
compression ratio is 8. The heat supplied is 2100 kJ/kg. Calculate the maximum
pressure and temperature of the cycle, the cycle efficiency, and the mean effective
pressure for air. Take
Cp = 1.005 kJ/kg-K, Cv = 0.718 kJ/kg-K, and R = 0.287 kJ/kg-K.
2. In an air standard Otto cycle the compression ratio is 7, and compression begins at 0.1
MPa, 35oC. The maximum temperature of the cycle is 1100oC. Find
a. the temperature and pressure at the cardinal points of the cycle
b. the heat supplied per kg of air
c. the work done per kg of air
d. the cycle efficiency and mean effective pressure of the cycle.
3. In a Diesel cycle, the compression ratio is 15. Compression begins at 0.1 MPa, 40 oC.
The heat added is 1.675 MJ/kg. Find
a. the maximum temperature in the cycle
b. work done per kg of air
c. the cycle efficiency
d. the temperature at the end of the isentropic expansion
e. the cut-off ratio and
f. the MEP of the cycle.
4. An air-standard Diesel cycle has a compression ratio of 16 and a cut-off ratio of 2. At
the beginning of the compression process, the air is at 100 kPa, 15 oC and has a
volume of 0.014 m3. Determine
a. the temperature after the heat addition process
b. the thermal efficiency and
c. the mean effective pressure.
5. An air standard limited pressure cycle has a compression ratio of 15 and compression
begins at 0.12 MPa, 40oC. The maximum pressure is limited to 6 MPa and the heat
added is 1.675 MJ/kg. Compute
a. The heat supplied at constant volume per kg air
b. The heat supplied at constant pressure per kg of air
c. The work done per kg of air
d. The cycle efficiency
e. The temperature at the end of the constant volume heating process
f. Cut-off ratio
g. Mean effective pressure of the cycle.
