1.2. The Manual
This installation instruction does not purport to cover all details on all types of
the product. The installation instruction cannot cover every conceivable case of
installation, operation or maintenance also.
Should you require further information, or should particular problems arise
which are not sufficiently dealt with in the installation instruction, you can
request the necessary information via the local Centec office.
We would also point out that the content of this manual is not part of an earlier or existing
agreement, promise or legal relationship or an amendment. All obligations of Centec GmbH result
from the respective sales contract, which also contains the complete and solely applicable warranty
conditions. These contractual warranty provisions are neither extended nor restricted by comments
in these operating instructions.
Dangerous voltage
The voltage in the system poses a serious risk to the health of the operator, the
system and the environment. An electric shock can lead directly to death and
cause damage to other objects.
- Before maintenance and repair work, the system must be switched off and
secured against being switched on again.
Danger of suffocation
CO2 displaces oxygen. Staying in a CO2 atmosphere leads to loss of
consciousness and death by suffocation.
- The CO2 operated system should only be installed in well ventilated rooms or
outdoors.
- We recommend the installation of a CO2 warning device.
Aggressive media
The system is cleaned (CIP) with aggressive media (e.g. caustic and acids).
Leaking caustic solutions and acids can cause serious burns.
- Before maintenance and repair work, the pipelines, which may contain
aggressive media, must be shut off and flushed with water.
5
Compressed gases
The plant is operated with pressurized gases. The sudden escape of
pressurized gases can cause serious damage to eyes, skin and hearing.
- Before maintenance and repair work, the pressurised pipelines must be shut
off and vented.
Hot surface
The system is operated, cleaned and flushed with hot media. The hot media
heat up the pipelines and component surfaces. Touching hot surfaces can lead
to burns.
- Before maintenance and repair work, the pipelines and components must be
cooled.
Hot media
The system is operated, cleaned and flushed with hot media. Escaping hot
media can cause burns.
- Before maintenance and repair work, the pipelines and components must be
cooled.
Cold surface
The cooling system is operated with coolants and/or refrigerants. The coolants
and/or refrigerants cool down the pipelines and component surfaces. Touching
cold surfaces can lead to frostbites.
- Before maintenance and repair work, the pipelines and components must be
warmed.
Cold media
The cooling system is operated with coolants and/or refrigerants. Escaping
coolants and/or refrigerants can lead to frostbites.
- Before maintenance and repair work, the pipelines and components must be
warmed.
This device may only be installed and operated with personal protective gear
worn. Wear always eye protection and protective gloves.
6
Prior to start any work you have to pay attention to the original supplier
documentations of each affected component.
7
2. Overview
Every CENTEC process measurement device can optionally be supplied with a Profibus DP
connection. For this, a separate extension board is mounted on top of the main board, which adds
a Profibus DP connection to the device.
This extension board is automatically detected, and does not require any modifications or additional
software installations on the sensor itself.
The connected PLC has to be programmed in such a way, that it communicates correctly though
(see chapters 5 - "Embedding the GSD file" and following)!
Due to the unproblematic installation, the Profibus extension board can also be bought separately
and installed by the customer into an existing device on site.
The function of the output connections on the main board is not affected, but any values read in via
analogue or digital inputs will be overwritten and the value received via Profibus will be used
instead!
8
3. Electrical Connection
3.1. Personnel qualification
Electrical installation work and work on control cabinets may only be carried out by electricians and
persons qualified to do so, observing the general accident prevention regulations, safety
instructions and company instructions. Depending on the country or company, additional
regulations may exist.
- Before carrying out any work, the power supply to the system must be switched off and
secured against being switched on again.
- After disconnecting from the power supply, check that no voltage is present.

After connecting the power supply and all signal wires, make sure that all cable
entries are tightened well, and no humidity can enter the electronics housing!
The following rules are generally valid for the signal cables:
- use only screened, two-wire cables twisted pair
- signal cables should be separated from cables with voltages > 60V
- avoid laying close to large electrical installations
- the specifications only apply for properly executed installations
At the connection X2 (Figure 1) you can see the input and output pin of the Profibus DP interface.
Beside the connection table there is a LED which shows the mode of the interface. If this LED is on,
the sensor is at the mode “Data Exchange” and the sensor is correctly recognized at the Profibus
net. By a flashing LED the sensor is actually exchanging data with the master system.
On the other side of the connection table there is a miniature DIP-switch. With this DIP-switch you
can switch the end-resistor (terminator) of the Profibus ON or OFF. The switch setting should be
selected depending on how the sensor is connected to the Profibus (see 3.4).
For a standard Profibus DP cable, you can see the wire-color in row 2 at Figure 2.
Only use cables which are explicitly certified for Profibus DP.
Avoid ground loops by the shielding of the Profibus DP cable.
10
3.4. Connection to the Profibus
If you connect a sensor in the middle of the Profibus network, you should always connect two
separate Profibus cable to the sensor. An input cable (incoming signal) and an output cable
(outgoing signal towards the next device).
Connect the input cable to the Profibus board (Figure 1), to pins 1, 2 and 3 (input).
Connect the output cable to pins 4, 5 and 6 (output) on the Profibus board.
Set the miniature dip switch S1 to the OFF position, otherwise the terminating resistor will be
switched on and the devices connected behind the Profibus sensor cannot be reached.
When using a Profibus sensor in the middle of the network with an input and an
output cable, the miniature dip switch S2 must be switched to the OFF position.
If the switch is set to ON, the bus will be separated and the devices behind the
sensor will not be reachable anymore. The Profibus will be out of service.
11
Figure 4: WRONG! Connection of the Centec Profibus Sensor with a single connection
You should never connect Centec Profibus sensor(s) with a single cable like a
“T-connection” in an existing or rebuilt network (Figure 4)! With such a structure,
the full function of the network is not secured, it can cause serious
communication problems, especially in larger networks. A total breakdown of
the network cannot be excluded.
If the Profibus sensor should be connected on the Profibus network as an end user, the Profibus
cable has to be connected to the Profibus board (Figure 1) at pins 1, 2 and 3 (input terminal). The
exact connection is shown in Figure 5.
Profibus input
Figure 5: Connection of a Profibus Sensor as the last device
12
If there is only one cable connected to the Profibus board, you have to set the miniature dip switch
S1 to the ON position, so that the bus-terminator is switched on. The switch S1 at the ON position
separates the connection between the input and the output terminal, further it switches the resistor
combination shown in Figure 6. The bus is completely Profibus conform.
The bus terminator at the end (last device) of the Profibus must always be
turned ON, so that a stable and rapid bus communication can be ensured. If the
terminator on the bus end is not switched on, serious communication problems
can occur, a total breakdown of the network cannot be excluded.
13
4. Settings on the sensor for measuring concentrations
4.1. General information
The operation of the Profibus sensors is principally identical to that of the sensors with
analog/digital communication. Please refer to the sensor specific manual for information on the
handling of the sensor!
In this manual, only the Profibus-related screens, which are not shown when there is no Profibus
board installed, are explained!
In the main menu, the Profibus submenu will show up in the "Communication" menu. The general
handling in this menu is the same as for the rest of the sensor.

5. Embedding the GSD file with TIA Portal
To install the Profibus sensor into a Profibus master system, you need the GSD-file provided by
Centec. The following describes how to install the GSD-file in the Siemens Software "TIA Portal"
and how to configure the Profibus sensor.
If you have selected this item, a window "GSD file" will pop up, click the button "Browse". Here you
can choose the path of the GSD-file (Figure 12). Select your CD Rom- or USB-drive with the
Centec storage device, go to the folder "PROFIBUS" and select the folder "GSD_Datei". Then click
the "OK" button.
17
Figure 12: Choose the folder of the GSD file
A window will pop up. There you have to choose the file „ V3Centec.gsd” and choose “install”.
The GSD file will then be installed onto your system.
18
5.2. Insert the Profibus sensor into the hardware configuration
Configure your hardware (Master System) as usual with the hardware manager. The integrated
GSD-file for the Centec Profibus sensors can be found in the catalogue under:
"PROFIBUS DP \ Other devices \ common \ Centec \ centec GmbH \ sensors".
The GSD-file is called „0“ and contains information of all Centec process devices.
Add the GSD-file to your Profibus master system (see Figure 14).
If you have integrated the GSD-file by drag and drop into your master system the window with the
adjustment of the Profibus address of the sensor will appear (Figure 15. Choose a free Profibus
address and set it in the hardware manager and also at the sensor (see chapter 4).
19
Figure 15: Choose the Profibus address
Make sure that the Profibus address is the same as the address which is set at
the Profibus sensor. If this address is different, a communication with the sensor
is not possible.
Figure 16: Attached sensor at your master system with “Free place” module
20
Now it is possible to "plug" the sensor module into slot 1. Simply drag and drop the "sensor" module
from the hardware catalogue (see Figure 14) to the free slot 1. The sensor is now successfully
integrated into your hardware configuration. In the lower tab "General" you can access the
addressing of the inputs/outputs (see Figure 16).
Depending on the selected output or input start address, the data that the sensor sends via the
Profibus are to be read in at the corresponding point.
21
6. Embedding the GSD file with Simatic Manager
To install the Profibus sensor into a Profibus master system, you need the GSD-file provided by
Centec. The following describes how to install the GSD-file in the Siemens Software "step 7" and
how to configure the Profibus sensor.
If you have selected this item, a window "Install GSD file" will pop up, click the button "Browse".
Here you can choose the path of the GSD-file (see Figure 20). Select your CD Rom- or USB-drive
with the Centec storage device, go to the folder "PROFIBUS" and select the folder "GSD_Datei".
Then click the "OK" button.
22
Figure 20: Choose the GSD file and installation
23
Figure 21: catalogue of GSD-files
If you have integrated the GSD-file by drag and drop into your master system the window with the
adjustment of the Profibus address of the sensor will appear (see Figure 15). Choose a free
Profibus address and set it in the hardware manager and also at the sensor (see chapter 4).
24
Figure 22: Select the Profibus address
Make sure that the Profibus address is the same as the address which is set at
the Profibus sensor. If this address is different, a communication with the sensor
is not possible.
25
Figure 23: Attached sensor at your master system.
If the sensor is "attached" at your master system a "free place" module is standard insert at slot 1
(Figure 23). The GSD-file can be used with several Centec sensors. Therefore, you have to mark
the "free place" module and remove it. Now the "slot 1" is empty (Figure 24).
26
Now it is possible to "plug" the sensor module into slot 1. Simply drag and drop the "sensor" module
from the hardware catalogue (Figure 21) to the free slot 1. The sensor is now successfully
integrated into your hardware configuration. In the lower tab "General" you can access the
addressing of the inputs/outputs (Figure 16).
Depending on the input and output starting address, the data on the Profibus can be read at
different places (see Figure 25).
27
7. Data structure of the sensor values
The Profibus sensor has 32 bytes output data (on the sensor outputs, inputs on the PLC master
system) and 32 bytes input data (on the sensor inputs, outputs on the PLC master system). The
data are cyclically read from the bus, the sensor operates on the DPV0 level. An acyclic
communication on DPV1 level is not possible.
The transmitted O2 concentration from the sensor is transmitted in the unit that was previously set
on the Oxytrans Profibus sensor.
The measured temperature of the sensor is always transmitted in the basic unit of degrees Celsius
[°C].
Via the two status bytes (status 1, status 2), all messages and states of the sensor can be called
up, including messages that are only needed in rare cases. The exact breakdown of the two status
bytes can be found in the two tables Table 3 and Table 4.
The error byte indicates faults and defects that have occurred in the Oxytrans TR Profibus sensor.
The exact assignment can be seen in Table 5 and Table 6.
28
The Oxytrans TR Profibus sensor should be configured before connecting it to
the bus system. As soon as the sensor is in the "Data exchange" mode
(indication in the bottom line of the display and red LED next to the bus
connection on the PCB lights up), only the display images can be viewed via the
operating buttons on the sensor; changes can no longer be made manually on
the sensor!
1
The message "Window change" indicates that the aging of the optical window has progressed to
the point where it must be replaced. Please contact Centec GmbH or your representative to order a
service kit. For more information, please refer to the Oxytrans TR Sensor manual.
2
The message "Freeze active" indicates that the measured value is currently frozen. The
measurement continues, but the measured value is no longer updated.
3
The message "CIP" indicates that the temperature is above the set shut-off temperature. The
measurement is stopped to prevent premature ageing of the electrical components. Please refer to
the Oxytrans TR sensor manual for the setting for the shut-off temperature and its more precise
meaning.
4
The message "Standby active" indicates that the sensor is in "Stand By". No more measurements
are being carried out.
5
The "error" message indicates that a fault is present. The exact fault message is described in the
fault byte.
29
Table 5: Exact assignment of status Error flag
Errors occurring on the Oxytrans TR Profibus sensor are displayed in this error byte 2. Errors to
which you must react immediately, as they cause or can cause a total failure of the measurement,
are as follows:
2
The temperature sensor has generated an error. Contact Centec or a Centec representative for
further action.
4
There is a problem with the connection between the main board and the oxygen module, please
check the cable connection at the main board (grey housing) or at the oxygen module (blue
housing). Contact Centec or a Centec representative for a detailed description of the problem and
further action.
5
The supply voltage has dropped below 24V, a safe measurement can no longer be guaranteed.
Messages that should be checked but do not lead to a total failure but possibly to a limited
measurement of the sensor are as follows:
1
The time in the sensor should be set under menu item "Settings" and "Date/Time".
3
There are problems with the analogue or digital outputs or the analogue inputs. Please check the
settings under "Communication" and "Analogue" or "Digital" and whether signal lines are
connected. If these are not used, they should be deactivated.
6
There are problems with the connected additional communication boards. Check whether they are
plugged in correctly. Contact Centec or a Centec representative for an exact description of the error
and further measures.
30
7.2. Inputs of Oxytrans TR
The Oxytrans TR profibus sensor has 32 byte input data with that the O2 concentration
measurement can be adjusted via the Profibus. For a start address of 0 in the hardware
configuration the addressing of the input data of the profibus sensor is shown in Table 7 below. If
the start address is not 0, a corresponding offset must be added.
It makes sense to pre-set the product specific alarm limits of the sensor via the Profibus, even if the
product management is done on the Profibus master system, because the sensor display has an
alarm generation in the bottom line. If the alarm limits are not used, a "zero" is always sent to the
sensor, and thus an alarm flashes constantly in the sensor display, which could confuse the local
operator.
Only one sample rate can be set via the Profibus interface. There is no
switchover between sample rate 1 and sample rate 2. If a faster oxygen
measurement is required in special processes or sub-processes, the sample
rate can be freely selected between 2 and 120 seconds via the Profibus
accordingly.
For the function of the offset, sample rate and alarm limits, please refer to the
standard manual of the Oxytrans TR.
31
The following table (Table 8) shows the breakdown of the input byte. Two values can be given to
the Oxytrans TR Profibus sensor as input signal. One is the "Freeze signal", which can be used to
freeze the measured value. However, the measurement is still carried out, only the display value is
no longer updated (see Oxytrans TR manual). On the other hand, the stand-by signal, with which
the sensor is switched to standby. The measurement is stopped and "-----" appears as the
measured value on the sensor display. However, the last measured value is transmitted via the
Profibus! Make sure that a defined measuring value is displayed on the master system in the
"stand-by" of the sensor. The signals can only be used individually, i.e. only "Stand-By" or only
"Freeze" can be selected, if both signals are "True", no action is executed.
In stand-by of the sensor, the last measured value is transmitted! Make sure
that a defined measured value is displayed on the master system. The signals
can only be used individually, i.e. only "Stand-By" or only "Freeze" can be
selected, if both signals are "True", no action is executed.
32
7.3. Outputs of Carbotec TR-PT
The following table (Table 9) shows the data structure of the output data of the Carbotec TR-PT
Profibus sensor. The addresses are assigned to the addressing of the master system if at the
hardware configuration start address 0 is chosen. The start address cannot always select to 0,
perhaps several other users in the Profibus network are already assigned to the address. If a
starting address is set unequal to 0, this address must be add correspondingly to the address at the
table.
The transmitted CO2 concentration from the sensor is transmitted in the unit that was previously set
on the Carbotec TR-PT Profibus sensor.
The measured temperature of the sensor is always transmitted in the basic unit of degrees Celsius
[°C].
Via the two status bytes (status 1, status 2), all messages and states of the sensor can be called
up, including messages that are only needed in rare cases. The exact breakdown of the two status
bytes can be found in the two tables Table 10 and Table 11.
The error byte indicates faults and defects that have occurred in the Carbotec TR-PT Profibus
sensor. The exact assignment can be seen in Table 12 and Table 13.
33

measurement is stopped to prevent premature ageing of the electrical components. Please refer to
the Carbotec TR-PT sensor manual for the setting for the shut-off temperature and its more precise
meaning.
3
The message "Standby active" indicates that the sensor is in "Stand By". No more measurements
are being carried out.

There are problems with the connected additional communication boards. Check whether they are
plugged in correctly. Contact Centec or a Centec representative for an exact description of the error
and further measures.
35
7.4. Inputs of the Carbotec TR-PT
The Profibus sensor has 32 byte input data with that the concentration measurement of CO2 can
be adjusted via the Profibus. For a start address of 0 in the hardware configuration the addressing
of the input data of the profibus sensor is shown in Table 14 below. If the start address is not 0, a
corresponding offset must be added.
Make sure that the Profibus address is the same as the address which is set at
the Profibus sensor. If this address is different, a communication with the sensor
is not possible.
For the function of the offset and product selection, please refer to the
standard manual of the Carbotec TR-PT.
1 The choice of the product numbers on the sensor is between 1 and 128 If the pre-given value is bigger than
128, the sensor works with the product 128, if it is smaller than 1, the sensor works with the product 1.
36
The following table (Table 15) shows the breakdown of the input byte. Two values can be given to
the Carbotec TR-PT Profibus sensor as input signal. One is the "Freeze signal", which can be used
to freeze the measured value. However, the measurement is still carried out, only the display value
is no longer updated (see Carbotec TR-PT manual). On the other hand, the stand-by signal, with
which the sensor is switched to standby. The measurement is stopped and "-----" appears as the

that a defined measured value is displayed on the master system. The signals
can only be used individually, i.e. only "Stand-By" or only "Freeze" can be

37
7.5. Outputs of Rhotec TR
The following table (Table 16) shows the data structure of the output data of the Rhotec TR
Profibus sensor. The addresses are assigned to the addressing of the master system if at the
hardware configuration start address 0 is chosen. The start address cannot always select to 0,
perhaps several other users in the Profibus network are already assigned to the address. If a
starting address is set unequal to 0, this address must be add correspondingly to the address at the
table.
The transmitted concentration from the sensor is transmitted in the unit that was previously set on
the Rhotec TR Profibus sensor.
The measured temperature of the sensor is always transmitted in the basic unit of degrees Celsius
[°C].
The measured density is always transmitted in the basic unit [g/cm³] and the measured period time
in the basic unit [ms].
The transmitted CO2 concentration transmitted via the analogue input is transmitted in [g/l].
Via the two status bytes (status 1, status 2), all messages and states of the sensor can be called
up, including messages that are only needed in rare cases. The exact breakdown of the two status
bytes can be found in the two tables Table 17 and Table 18.
The exceeded alarm limits are displayed in the alarm byte. The exact breakdown can be seen in
Table 19.
The error byte indicates faults and defects that have occurred in the Rhotec TR Profibus sensor.
The exact assignment can be seen in Table 20.
38
The Rhotec TR Profibus sensor should be configured before connecting it to the
bus system. As soon as the sensor is in the "Data exchange" mode (indication
in the bottom line of the display and red LED next to the bus connection on the
PCB lights up), only the display images can be viewed via the operating buttons
on the sensor; changes can no longer be made manually on the sensor!
1
The "Flush alarm" message indicates that flushing with hot water is no longer sufficient and
cleaning must be performed.
Please refer to
the Rhotec TR sensor manual for the setting for the shut-off temperature and its more precise
meaning.
4
The message "Flush active" indicates that the sensor is in flush mode i.e. hot water flush. For
more information, refer to the Rhotec IO-flush manual.
5
The message "Standby active" indicates that the sensor is in "Stand By". No more measurements
are being carried out.
6
The "Error" message indicates that a fault is present. The exact fault message is described in the
fault byte.
39
Table 19: Exact assignment of status Error flag
Errors occurring on the Rhotec TR Profibus sensor are displayed in this error byte 2. Errors to
which you must react immediately, as they cause or can cause a total failure of the measurement,
are as follows:
2
The temperature sensor has generated an error. Contact Centec or a Centec representative for
further action.
3
The density sensor has generated an error. Contact Centec or a Centec representative for further
action.
5
There is a problem with the connection between the main board and the density module, please
check the cable connection at the main board (grey housing) or at the density module (blue
housing). Contact Centec or a Centec representative for a detailed description of the problem and
further action.
6
The supply voltage has dropped below 24V, a safe measurement can no longer be guaranteed.
Messages that should be checked but do not lead to a total failure but possibly to a limited
measurement of the sensor are as follows:
1
The time in the sensor should be set under menu item "Settings" and "Date/Time".
4
There are problems with the analogue or digital outputs or the analogue inputs. Please check the
settings under "Communication" and "Analogue" or "Digital" and whether signal lines are
connected. If these are not used, they should be deactivated.
7
There are problems with the connected additional communication boards. Check whether they are
plugged in correctly. Contact Centec or a Centec representative for an exact description of the error
and further measures.

7.6. Inputs of the Rhotec TR
The Profibus sensor has 32 byte input data with that the concentration measurement can be
adjusted via the Profibus. For a start address of 0 in the hardware configuration the addressing of
the input data of the profibus sensor is shown in Table 21 below. If the start address is not 0, a
corresponding offset must be added.
Make sure that the Profibus address is the same as the address which is set at
the Profibus sensor. If this address is different, a communication with the sensor
is not possible.
For the function of the offset and product selection, please refer to the
standard manual of the Rhotec TR.
2 The choice of the product numbers on the sensor is between 1 and 128 If the pre-given value is bigger than
128, the sensor works with the product 128, if it is smaller than 1, the sensor works with the product 1.
41
The following table (Table 22) shows the breakdown of the input byte. Two values can be given to
the Rhotec TR Profibus sensor as input signal. One is the "Freeze signal", which can be used to
freeze the measured value. However, the measurement is still carried out, only the display value is
no longer updated (see Rhotec TR manual). On the other hand, the stand-by signal, with which the
sensor is switched to standby. The measurement is stopped and "-----" appears as the measured
value on the sensor display. However, the last measured value is transmitted via the Profibus!
Make sure that a defined measuring value is displayed on the master system in the "stand-by" of
the sensor. The signals can only be used individually, i.e. only "Stand-By" or only "Freeze" can be
selected, if both signals are "True", no action is executed.
In stand-by of the sensor, the last measured value is transmitted! Make sure
that a defined measured value is displayed on the master system. The signals

7.7. Outputs of Sonatec TR
The following table (Table 23) shows the data structure of the output data of the Sonatec TR
Profibus sensor. The addresses are assigned to the addressing of the master system if at the
hardware configuration start address 0 is chosen. The start address cannot always select to 0,
perhaps several other users in the Profibus network are already assigned to the address. If a
starting address is set unequal to 0, this address must be add correspondingly to the address at the
table.
The transmitted concentration from the sensor is transmitted in the unit that was previously set on
the Sonatec TR Profibus sensor.
The measured temperature of the sensor is always transmitted in the basic unit of degrees Celsius
[°C].
The sound velocity is always transmitted in the basic unit [m/s] and the sound runtime in the basic
unit [µs].
The transmitted CO2 concentration transmitted via the analogue input is transmitted in [g/l].
Via the two status bytes (status 1, status 2), all messages and states of the sensor can be called
up, including messages that are only needed in rare cases. The exact breakdown of the two status
bytes can be found in the two tables Table 24 and Table 25.
The exceeded alarm limits are displayed in the alarm byte. The exact breakdown can be seen in
Table 26.
