SEMESTER- V B.Tech. (ECE)
End Term Examination Nov./Dec.2023

EC-301 Digital Communication

Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 40
Note: Answer ANY 5 questions. Assume suitable missing data, if any.

Q.No. 1(a) Given the data stream 1010010100, Sketch the transmitted sequence of
pulses for each of the following line codes: Unipolar- NRZ, Polar-NRZ,
Manchester Code.
(b) Consider a DM system designed to accommodate analog message
signals limited to bandwidth W=5kHz. A sinusoidal test signal of amplitude A=1
volt and frequency fm=1 kHz is applied to the system. The sampling rate of the
system is 50 kHz. (i) Calculate the step size required to minimize slope overload.
(ii) Calculate signal to quantization noise ratio of the system for the specified
sinusoidal test signal.

Q.No. 2(a) A PCM system uses a uniform quantizer followed by a 7-bit binary
encoder. The bit rate of the system is equal to 50 x 106 b/s.What is the maximum
message bandwidth for which the system operates satisfactorily? Determine the
output Signal to Quantization noise ratio when a full load sinusoidal modulating
wave of frequency 1 MHz is applied to Input.
(b) Derive expression for the Impulse response of the Matched filter for the
binary signal and write it’s properties.

Q.No. 3(a) An FSK system transmits binary data in terms of the rate of 2.5 x 106
bits per second. During the course of transmission, white Gaussian noise of zero
mean and power spectral density 10-20W/Hz is added to the signal. In absence of
noise, the amplitude of the received sinusoidal wave for digit 1 or 0 is mV.
Determine the average probability of symbol error for the following system
configurations
(i) Coherent MSK
(ii) Noncoherent binary MSK.
(b) Derive the probability of error expression for MSK. Discuss the similarities
between MSK and offset QPSK and the feature that distinguish them.
Q.No. 4(a) Derive the expression for probability of error for coherent BFSK.
Compare BFSK and BPSK.
(b) Consider the optimum detection of the sinusoidal signal s(t)= sin
(8πt/T) 0≤ t ≤ T in additive white Gaussian. (i) Determine the correlator output
assuming additive white Gaussian Noisy input.(ii) Determine the probability of
error using Maximum Likelihood Detection principle .
Q.No. 5(a) (i) Using the Gram Schmidt orthogonalization procedure, find a set of
orthonormal basis functions to represent the three signals s1(t), s2(t) and s3(t)
shown in Figure 1.
(ii) Express each of these signals in terms of the set of basis functions
found in part (i).
