8. The term bios means life. Thus, biosphere is that realm of the Earth where life
exists. It is a narrow zone where land, water and air come into contact with each
other. Living beings exist only in the biosphere. It is this biosphere which makes
the Earth a unique planet in the solar system.
The inhabitants of the biosphere are classified into two major groups- the plant
kingdom and the animal kingdom.

Hydrosphere
❖ The water cycle is one of the factors that make life possible on Earth.
❖ Water in the air results in weather phenomena.
❖ Oceans have a moderating effect on the climate of coastal regions.
❖ Electricity can be generated from water.
❖ Water from rivers and lakes as well as underground water is used for
irrigation and our daily requirements.

7. Why is the Atlantic Ocean the busiest ocean? (3)


• The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean situated between the North
and South America on one side and Europe and Africa on the other side.
• Due to the irregular shape, the coastlines of Atlantic Ocean are longer
than the coastlines of the Pacific Ocean and Indian Oceans put together.
• The Atlantic Ocean is known as the busiest ocean (in terms of passenger
and cargo traffic) of the world from the point of view of commerce.
• It is situated between two of the most developed regions of the world,
North America and Europe, making it very important for trade and
commerce.

• The large masses of land are called continents.
• All the oceans are connected with each other. Thus, the level of sea water
remains the same throughout the world. This level of sea water is known
as sea level.

• Forests are being cleared, minerals are being recklessly extracted.
• Various industries and vehicles are polluting the land, water and air.
Thus, there is an urgent need to protect our environment and maintain the
balance among all the realms of the Earth.
