Assignment-2

Applied Physics – I
Question 1: Interference of Light
1. Explain the phenomenon of interference of light. Discuss the conditions necessary for
sustained interference patterns to form.
2. Derive the expression for fringe width in Young’s double-slit experiment.
3. If the distance between the slits is 0.1 mm and the wavelength of light used is 600 nm,
calculate the fringe width on a screen placed 1 meter away from the slits.
Question 2: Diffraction of Light
1. Define diffraction and distinguish between Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction.
2. Single-Slit Diffraction:
o Derive the expression for intensity distribution in single-slit diffraction.
o If light of wavelength 500 nm is incident on a slit of width 0.05 mm, calculate
the angular width of the central maximum in the diffraction pattern observed
on a screen 2 meters away.
Question 3: Polarization
1. Explain the concept of polarization of light. Discuss the methods of obtaining
polarized light, specifically by reflection and refraction.
2. Explain the phenomenon of double refraction. How does it differ from ordinary
refraction?
3. Define and distinguish between ordinary rays (O-ray) and extraordinary rays (E-
ray).

Question 4: Special Theory of Relativity

1. Define time dilation and length contraction. Derive the formulas associated
with both phenomena.
2. If an astronaut travels at 0.8c (where ccc is the speed of light) and records a
journey time of 5 years from their perspective, calculate the time observed by
a stationary observer on Earth.
Question 5: LASER Fundamentals
1. Describe the basic principle behind LASER operation. Explain the terms: population
inversion, stimulated emission, and optical pumping.
2. What is the relation between Einstein’s A and B coefficient.
3. Draw Energy level diagram of He-Ne LASER.
