NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS EQUATION AND APPLICATIONS1

Course: MAT614: NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

EQUATION AND APPLICATIONS
Credit Value: 6
Course Master: Prof. Boniface Nkemzi
Status: Elective
Prerequisite: MAT 613

ASSIGNMENT ONE: To be submitted by email latest Wednesday, 30 April 2025.

Read carefully topics on Sobolev spaces and variational formulations of elliptic boundary value prob-
lems and then answer the following questions.

1. Let Ω ⊂ Rn be a bounded domain with boundary ∂Ω.

(a) Define the weak derivative of a function f : Ω → R.

(b) Give a justified example of a function that is differentiable in the weak sense but is not
differentiable in the classical sense.
(c) Give a justified example of a function that is not differentiable in the weak sense.

2. Let Ω ⊂ Rn be a bounded domain with boundary ∂Ω.

(a) Define the Sobolev space H k (Ω), the associated norm, semi-norm and scalar product.
(b) Formulate without proofs (i) the trace theorem, (ii) Green’s formula and (iii) Friedrichs’
inequality.
(c) Define the Sobolev space H01 (Ω) and show that in it the semi-norm is a norm and it is
equivalent to the standard norm.

3. Let Ω ⊂ Rn be a bounded domain with boundary ∂Ω. Consider the differential equation
n ∂ ³ ∂u ´
in Ω
X
− a1 + a0 u = f (0.1)
i =1 ∂ x i ∂xi

for given functions f , a 1 and a 0 with a 1 (x) ≥ C 1 > 0 and a 0 (x) ≥ C 0 > 0 for all x ∈ Ω.

(a) What do you understand by a well posed mathematical problem?

(b) Formulate without proof the Lax-Milgram lemma.
(c) Let Equation (0.1) be endowed with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition u = 0 on
∂Ω. (i) Derive the associated variational formulation. (ii) Show that the variational for-
mulation is well posed.
(d) Let Equation (0.1) be endowed with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition u = g
on ∂Ω. (i) Derive the associated variational formulation. (ii) Show that the variational
formulation is well posed.
(e) Let Equation (0.1) be endowed with Neumann boundary condition ∂∂νu = g on ∂Ω, where ν =
(ν1 , · · · , νn ) denotes the unit outward normal on ∂Ω. (i) Derive the associated variational
formulation. (ii) Show that the variational formulation is well posed.
(f) Let Equation (0.1) be endowed with mixed boundary condition u = g on ΓD and f rac∂ u∂ν =
h on Γ N , where Γ̄D ∪ Γ̄ N = ∂Ω. (i) Derive the associated variational formulation. (ii) Show
that the variational formulation is well posed.
