Applications of information and

communication technologies
➢Protocol
➢Encoder/Decoder
Elements of data communication

Protocol:

A set of rules that govern data communication, ensuring proper interpretation

and transfer of messages.

Examples: TCP/IP, HTTP, FTP.

Encoder/Decoder:

Encoder: Converts the message into a format suitable for transmission.

Decoder: Converts the received message back into its original format

Data Transmission

refers to the process of sending digital or analog data between devices

through a communication medium.

This process is a fundamental aspect of data communication and can be

categorized based on the type of data, medium, and method of

transmission.
Analog Transmission

Analog transmission uses continuous signals to convey information.

The signals vary in amplitude, frequency, or phase over time.

Commonly used in older telecommunication systems and broadcasting.

Susceptible to noise and signal degradation over long distances.

Examples include AM/FM radio, traditional telephony, and analog TV

signals.
Digital Transmission

Digital transmission uses discrete signals, typically in binary form (0s and

1s).

It is more robust against noise and allows for error detection and

correction.

Widely used in modern communication systems like the internet and digital

media.

Ensures higher efficiency and better data integrity over long distances.

Examples include computer networks, digital TV, and email

communication.
Transmission Methods
(1) Parallel Transmission:
Multiple data bits are sent simultaneously over multiple channels.
Used for short-distance communication.
Example: Data transfer within a computer (e.g., between CPU and RAM)
2) Serial Transmission:
Data bits are sent sequentially over a single channel.
Used for long-distance communication.
Example:connection established between a computer and a modem.
There are two serial data transmission methods
1)Synchronous
2)Asynchronous Transmission
Data Transmission Techniques

Synchronous Transmission:
Data is sent in a continuous stream with the sender and receiver
synchronized.
Example: Video streaming, VoIP.

Asynchronous Transmission:
Data is sent one byte at a time, with start and stop bits to indicate the
beginning and end of transmission.
Example: Email communication.
MODEM

MODEM
A modem (short for modulator-demodulator) is a hardware

device that facilitates data communication by converting digital

signals from a computer into analog signals for transmission over

communication mediums (like telephone lines) and vice versa. It

enables internet connectivity and other forms of data transfer.

MODEM
Functions of a Modem

Modulation: Converts digital signals from a device into
analog signals for transmission.

Demodulation: Converts received analog signals back
into digital form for the device.

Error Detection and Correction: Ensures reliable data
transfer by identifying and correcting errors.

Data Compression: Reduces the size of data to
optimize transmission speed.

Interface with ISP: Acts as a bridge between a user’s
device and the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
