8.3 Graphical Representation of Motion

The document explains distance-time and velocity-time graphs in relation to motion. It describes how these graphs represent different states of motion, including rest, uniform motion, and non-uniform motion, as well as uniform and non-uniform acceleration. Key concepts include the slope of the graphs representing speed or acceleration and the area under the graphs representing displacement.

Distance - Time Graphs

1. When a body is at rest

Distance - time graph is straight line parallel to the time axis.

2. When a body is in uniform motion

The distance - time graph is a straight line inclined to the time axis.
Slope of the graph represents speed or velocity of the body.

3. When the body is in non-uniform motion Or accelerated motion

Distance - time graph is a curved line.
When the speed of body increases with passage of time.

When the speed of body decreases with passage of time.

Velocity - Time Graphs (or Speed - Time Graph)

1. When body is moving with uniform velocity

Velocity - time graph is a straight line parallel to time axis.

The area enclosed by the - graph and time axis will be equal to the magnitude of
displacement or distance covered.

MOTION – GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION 3 CLASS - IX

The product of velocity and time give displacement of an object moving with uniform
velocity.

2. When body is moving with a uniform acceleration

Velocity - time graph is a straight line inclined to time axis.

Slope of - graph represents acceleration of the body.

Distance travelled by a uniformly accelerated body in a certain interval of time is equal
to area under the - graph.
When the velocity of body is decreasing uniformly with time, it is undergoing
uniform retardation.
The - graph in this case is straight line with negative slope.

When a body is moving with a uniform acceleration, but its initial velocity is not
zero (i.e., 0 at = 0), the - graph is a straight line that does not pass
through origin. At = 0, = OA

MOTION – GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION 4 CLASS - IX

3. When body is moving with non-uniform acceleration

- graph is a curved line.
