Introduction
Introduction
The Philippines has a rich maritime culture that stretches back thousands of years, with boats playing a
central role in the lives of its early inhabitants. Known as "boat people," these early Filipinos were
celebrated for their exceptional seafaring skills and the importance of boats in their society. This deep
connection to the sea reflects a heritage of exploration, trade, and cultural exchange that has profoundly
shaped the nation's history and identity.
Design Problem
The Philippines' rich maritime heritage is underrepresented in existing museums. This proposal aims to
create a comprehensive museum that more accurately reflects the nation’s maritime history while enhancing
both public engagement and educational opportunities.
Project Objectives
1. preservation
• the elements will be presented in a way that engages visitors, connecting to our history and
ensuring that this heritage is not only preserved but also actively experienced
2. education
• this is to make history accessible and engaging
• by incorporating formal spaces + interactive exhibits = the museum will serve as a great
educational resource for schools and the general public
3. innovation
• this will bring history to life, allowing visitors to engage in dynamic and meaningful ways
• this ensures that the museum remains relevant and engaging for all age groups
4. engagement
• with all the objectives combined, the museum will create a deeply engaging experience for
the community
• preservation provides the foundation, education amplifies this engagement, and
innovation further enhances this by making the learning experience immersive and
interactive
• together, these elements create a museum that is not just a place to observe history, but a
dynamic space where the community cam actively participate, learn, and connect
Preliminary Site
1. historical significance
• proximity to historical ports, shipbuilding areas, significant maritime events
• reflects the development of Subic as a leisure and recreational hub, closely linked to its
maritime heritage
• proximity to the yacht club ties the location to more contemporary maritime activities,
which can offer a modern perspective on maritime culture
2. location and accessibility
• proximity to transportation hubs, major roads, and ports to facilitate visitor access
• high visibility
• easily accessible by road from both Manila and Clark
• tourism friendly
3. environmental considerations
• impact on marine ecosystems (possible environmental impact if located near coastal areas)
• scenic views of and relatively low industrial activity nearby
• provides opportunities to integrate marine conservation themes and connect the museum
to outdoor activities like sailing and eco-tours
4. potential collaboration
• near other cultural/educational institutions that can provide opportunities for collaboration,
shared programs, and cross-promotion
• strong tourism and leisure partnerships with local businesses, yacht clubs, and tourism
boards
• potential educational and environmental collaborations with NGOs, marine groups, SBMA
(Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority), and marine conservation partnerships
