EE312 Recitation 04

The document outlines exercises related to communication principles, focusing on Fourier transforms, signal processing, and filter responses. It includes tasks such as deriving expressions for signals, computing Fourier series coefficients, and analyzing the effects of sampling and filtering on signals. Additionally, it addresses the Hilbert transform and the characteristics of various input signals in relation to filter outputs.

EE312: Communication Principles IGEE 2024/2025/S2

Recitation 04
Exercise 01:
Consider the full wave rectified sinewave s(t), its frequency is 2𝑓0 where 𝑓0 is the frequency of the
𝑇 1
sinewave. Let x(t) be an arch of cosine of length 𝑇𝑝 = 20 , where 𝑇0 = 𝑓 as shown below.
0
a) Write the expression of s(t) in terms of x(t)
b) Compute the Fourier transform X(f)
c) Deduce the Fourier series coefficient of x(t) using X(f).
Note: Using the obtained coefficients, you may check at home for a few
harmonics that the trigonometric Fourier series is the same as the one obtained
in exercise 01 of recitation 01)

Exercise 02
Consider the signal 𝑥(𝑡) = cos(2𝜋100𝑡). This signal is sampled with a sampling frequency
1
𝑓𝑠 = 𝑇 = 150𝐻𝑧. The output of the sampler 𝑥𝑠 (𝑡) passes through an ideal low pass filter with
𝑠
𝑓
transfer function 𝐻(𝑓) = 𝑇𝑠 Π(2𝑊), where W=75 Hz
a) Find the expression of the Fourier transform Xs(f) of 𝑥𝑠 (𝑡)
b) Find the output of the low pass filter.
c) Does the filter recover the original signal 𝑥(𝑡)? What if W=120 Hz? Explain.

Exercise 03:
1. The Fourier transform of the real signal x(t) is shown below.
Determine and sketch the spectrum of each of the following signals, where 𝑥̂(𝑡) denotes the Hilbert
transform of x(t).
a) 𝑥1 (𝑡) = 𝑥(𝑡) + 𝑗𝑥̂(𝑡)
2 1
b) 𝑥2 (𝑡) = 3 𝑥(𝑡) + 3 𝑗𝑥̂(𝑡)

2) Consider the signal 𝑠(𝑡) = sinc(t) cos(200𝜋𝑡)

a) Find the Fourier transform S(f)
b) Compute the associated analytic signal s+(t).
c) Find the spectrum S+(f) of the analytic signal

Exercise 04:

1) Write the phase response as a function of frequency:

2) Deduce the time delay τ of this filter.
3) Find the output corresponding to each of the following input signals and specify if the
transmission is distortionless.
a) 𝑥1 (𝑡) = cos(10𝜋𝑡) + 2 cos(12𝜋𝑡)
b) 𝑥2 (𝑡) = 2 cos(16𝜋𝑡) + 0.5 cos(34𝜋𝑡)
