FILL IN THE GAPS
1. A shunt generator is running at 800 rpm and has a generated emf of 200V.
If the speed increases to 1000 rpm the generated emf will be
nearly_________volt.
2. The condition for reversing the direction of d.c. shunt motor, we have to
_________.

Answer the Following questions

(1) What do you mean by back emf?

(2) A 6-pole wave wound dc shunt generator has a useful flux per
pole of 0.05 Wb. The armature has 500 conductors and
resistance of 0.5Ω. Determine the terminal voltage when the
armature is rotating at 1000 rpm and armature current is 30A.

(3) A 200V dc shunt motor runs at 500 rpm at rated full load
condition and takes an armature current of 100 A. The armature
resistance is 0.2 Ω. Identify the speed of motor when the field
circuit resistance is increased such that the flux is reduced to
80% of the normal value and the motor is loaded for an
armature current of 50 A.
(4) Derive the emf equation of a DC generator?

(5) Derive the torque equation of a DC motor?

(6) A 4 pole wave connected armature has 40 slots with 10
conductors per slot, generating a voltage of 500 Volts.
Determine the speed at which it is running if the flux per pole is
60 mWb. Also calculate the terminal voltage and field current
when armature current is 20 A. consider the armature
resistance is 0.1 Ω and the machine is running as a shunt
generator having a shunt field resistance of 250 Ω.

(7) “DC series motor should not start at no-load condition”- Explain
with suitable characteristics.
(8) A 4 pole dc generator has 50 slots and each contains 20
conductors. Flux per pole is 0.5 mWb and runs at 1500 rpm.
Evaluate the produced emf of the machine if its armature is (i)
Lap wound (ii) Wave wound.

(10) Draw and explain the torque vs speed characteristics of dc shunt
and series motor.
(11) A dc generator has an armature emf of 200V when the use-full
flux per pole is 5 mWb, and the speed is 600 rpm. Calculate the
generated emf with the same flux and speed of 1000 rpm.

(12) A dc shunt motor runs at 600 rpm taking 10 A from 220 V supply.
Armature and field resistances are 0.2 Ω and 220 Ω respectively.

(15) A 450 V DC series motor runs at 600 rpm taking a current of 40
A. Evaluate the speed when the load is reduced so that the motor
is taking a current of 30 A. Total resistance of the armature and
field circuit is 0.8 Ω. Assume the flux is proportional to the field
current.
