Course Name: Process Dynamics and Control

Assignment-07
Submission Date: 30 April’25

Q. No. 1: Consider a control system as shown in Fig. 1.

2
Yset KC Y
(4𝑠 + 1)2

𝑒−2𝑠
Fig. 1

(a) Determine the characteristic equation of the closed-loop response.

(b) Determine the value of the KC that will cause the system to be stable.
[Use the Routh Test and 1-order Pade’s approximation]

Q. No. 2: The question has been raised whether an open-loop unstable process can be stabilized
with a proportional-only controller.
(a) For the process and controller shown in Fig. 2, find the range of KC values that yield a stable
response. (Note that τ is positive)

Yset KC Y
1 − 𝜏𝑠

(b) For K=10 and τ=20, find the value of KC that yield a pole at s = -0.1. What is the offset for
these conditions?

𝐺𝑃 = 1
Y
𝑠+1
10

𝐺𝑓 =
𝑠+1 Gm
𝐺𝐶 = 2(1 + 0.5𝑠 )
𝐺𝑚 = 1 Fig. 3

(a) Calculate amplitude ratio (AR) and phase lag (φ) for open-loop transfer function.
(b) Plot the asymptotic Bode diagram.
