Assignment 03

The document outlines an assignment for a course in Process Dynamics and Control, detailing four questions related to process models and transfer functions. It includes tasks such as deriving responses, calculating exit compositions, and determining steady-state gains and time constants. The assignment emphasizes the application of Laplace transforms and the analysis of dynamic systems in chemical and biochemical engineering.

Course Name: Process Dynamics and Control

Assignment-3
Submission Date: 17 Feb’25

Q. No 1: An additive process model is depicted in the Figure 1 below.

G3

Figure 1
1 2 −2
For 𝐺1 = , 𝐺2 = , 𝐺3 = , 𝑈(𝑠) = 1
𝑠 2𝑠+1 𝑠+1

(a) Derive the response Y(s).

(b) Find out initial and ultimate value of y(t).

Q. No. 2: A stirred-tank blending system can be described by a first order transfer function between
the exit composition x and the inlet composition x1 as:
̃ (𝒔)
𝑿 𝟎.𝟔
̃ 𝟏 (𝒔)
= time constant unit: minute
𝑿 𝟏𝟎𝒔+𝟏

When the blending system is at steady state (𝑥̅ = 0.3), the dynamic behavior is tested
by quickly adding a large amount of a radioactive tracer, thus approximating an impulse
function with magnitude1.5.
(a) Calculate the exit composition response x(t) using Laplace transform and sketch x(t).
(b) Based on this analytical expression, what is the value of x(0)?

Q. No-3: Consider the following transfer function:

𝑌(𝑠) 5
𝐺(𝑠) = =
𝑈(𝑠) 10𝑠 + 1
(a) What is the steady-state gain?
(b) What is the time constant?
(c) If U(s)= 2/s, what is the value of the output y(t) when t → ∞?
(d) For the same U(s), what is the value of the output when t=10? What is the output
when expressed as a fraction of the new steady-state value?

Q. No-4: A process of unknown transfer function is subjected to a unit-impulse input. The output
of the process is measured accurately and is found to be represented by the function y(t)
= t.e-t. Determine the unit-step response of this process.
