AirConditioning Assignment and Tutorial

The document outlines a tutorial assignment for EBE 403/TET 301: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning at Kenyatta University, consisting of 15 questions related to thermodynamic calculations involving air properties, heat transfer, and humidity. Students are required to perform calculations on various scenarios involving air temperature, relative humidity, cooling, and dehumidification processes. The assignment aims to enhance understanding of psychrometric principles and their applications in engineering.

TUTORIAL

TO BE SUBMITTED AS ASSIGNMENT QUESTION 1, 2, 3 and 4

1. Atmosphere air enters a heater at 450C and 60% relative humidity and leaves at a
temperature of 210C. Calculate
(i) The heat supplied to the air.
(ii) The final relative humidity.

2. 100m3 of air per minute at 350C DBT and 60% relative humidity is cooled to 200C DBT by
passing through a cooling coil. Find the following:
(i) Capacity of cooling coil inkJ/h,
(ii) Amount of water vapour removed per hour, and
(iii) Relative humidity of air coming out ans its wet-bulb temperature.

3. Atmosphere air at 380 and 40 per cent relative humidity is to be cooled and dehumidified to
a state of saturated air at 100C. The mass rate of flow of atmospheric air entering the
dehumidifier is 45.4kg/h. Neglecting any any pressure drop, determine
(i) The mass of water removed
(ii) The quantity of heat removed.

4. 1 kg of air at 240C and a relative humidity of70% is to be mixed adiabatically in a steady

state, steady flow device with 1 kg of air at 160C and a relative humidity of 10%. Assuming
that the mixture is to be carried out at a constant pressure of 1.01325bar, determine the
temperature and relative humidity of the stream leaving the device.

THE FOLLWING ARE FOR YOUR ON TUTORIAL PRACTICE

5. The atmosphere conditions are 300C ans specific humidity of 0.0215 kg/kg of air.
(i) Partial pressure of air
(ii) Relative humidity
(iii) Dew point temperature
Atmospheric pressure = 1.01325bar

6. A mixture of air and water vapour at 1 bar and 250C has a dew point temperature of 150C.
Determine the relative humidity and specific humidity.

7. An air-water vapour mixture at 1.24 bar has a temperature of 380C and relative humidity of 60%
Calculate the kg-mass of water vapour per kg of air and per kg of mixture. Also find the dew
point.
8.
9. The air supplied to a room of building in winter is to be at 170C and have a relative humidity of
60%. If the barometric pressure is 1.01325 bar, calculate the specific humidity. What would be
the dew point under these conditions?

10. If air at the condition of example 5, is passed at the rate of 0.5 m3/s over a cooling coil which is at
a temperature of 60C, calculate the amount of vapour which will be condensed. Assume that the
barometric pressure is the same as in example 5, and that the air leaving the coill is saturated.

11. An air and water vapour mixture at 1 bar and 26.70C has a specific humudity of 0.0085.
Determine the specific humidities.

12. A mixture of air and water vapour at 1.013 bar ans 160Chas a dew point of 50C. Determine the
relative and specific humidities.

13. Atmospheric air at a pressure of 1.01325bar has a temperature of 320C and a percentage
saturation as determined from a psychrometric chart of 52%. Calculate
(i) the partial pressure of the vapour and the dry air
(ii) the specific humidity
(iii) The dew point
14. In a laboratory test, a psychrometer recorded 360C DBT and 300 WBT. Using psychrometric
chart, find
(i) Vapour pressure
(ii) Relative humidity
(iii) Specific humidity
(iv) Degree saturation
(v) Dew point remperature
(vi) Enthalpy of the mixture

15. The presure and temperature of the air in a room is 1 bar and 280C. If the relative humidity is
found to be 30 per cent, determine:
(i) the partial pressure of the water vapour and dew point,
(ii) the specific humidity.
