India struggles with plastic waste management, recycling only 8% of its plastic waste, but recycles about 90% of PET waste. Innovative chemical recycling processes, like those by Revalyu Resources, show promise in reducing environmental impact and conserving resources. To promote these methods, policy support, public awareness, infrastructure development, and ongoing research are essential.

"Waste is only waste if we waste the opportunity to transform it.

"
India faces a significant challenge with plastic waste management. According to a 2024
study, only 8% of the country's plastic waste is recycled, with projections indicating a
marginal increase to 11% by 2035. This is concerning, especially given the expected rise in
plastic consumption to 70.5 million tonnes by that time . However, when focusing
specifically on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste, the scenario appears more optimistic.
A 2017 study revealed that India recycles approximately 90% of its PET waste, surpassing
recycling rates in Japan, Europe, and the United States .
The environmental impact of PET waste is profound. Improper disposal leads to pollution of
land and waterways, harming wildlife and entering the human food chain as micro plastics.
Innovative chemical recycling processes, such as those implemented by Revalyu Resources
in Nashik, Maharashtra, offer a promising solution. By investing $100 million, Revalyu has
expanded its production capacity to recycle over 20 million used PET bottles daily, producing
160 tonnes of high-quality PET chips and polymer. This method consumes 75% less water
and 91% less energy compared to conventional PET manufacturing .
The positive environmental impacts of such advancements are substantial. They reduce the
volume of plastic waste in landfills and natural habitats, lower greenhouse gas emissions
associated with traditional plastic production, and conserve resources by decreasing reliance
on virgin materials. Furthermore, these processes can stimulate economic growth by creating
jobs in the recycling sector.
To make this method common practice, several steps are essential:
1. Policy Support: The government should introduce incentives for companies adopting
advanced recycling technologies and enforce stricter regulations on plastic waste
management.
2. Public Awareness: Educating citizens about the benefits of recycling and proper
waste segregation can increase the quality and quantity of recyclable materials.
3. Infrastructure Development: Investing in robust collection and sorting infrastructure
ensures a steady supply of post-consumer PET for recycling facilities.
4. Research and Development: Continuous innovation is necessary to improve the
efficiency and cost-effectiveness of recycling technologies.
In conclusion, embracing innovative chemical recycling processes for PET waste presents a
viable pathway to mitigate plastic pollution in India. By integrating policy measures, public
participation, and technological advancements, this approach can transition from isolated
initiatives to widespread practice, fostering a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
