HELPING SOCIETY PROGRESS THROUGH BUILDING AN OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY

By Quincy Larson

FREECODECAMP WAS STARTED [...duration...] ago.

Initial Goal was to build an effective way for anyone to learn to code well enough
to get a developer job.

INITIAL TRACTION
Quincy blogged a lot and some of my articles got to the top of Y-Combinator's
Hacker news website.
He used this influx of campers to build a critical mass in Freecodecamp chat rooms.

VOLUNTEERS TEAM BUILDING

Most of our coding challenges, coding videos, and blog articles were created by
volunteers in our community.
They've used freeCodeCamp as a ladder to get jobs at companies like
Spotify,GitHub,and Samsung working as developers.
It is hard to get a job when you don't have experience.
By contributing directly to FreeCodeCamp,It gives you experience by help build
Projects for the latter. And also by building
projects for non-Profits organizations.
so when you go to apply for a job, even if it's your first developer job,you can
point to projects you built as an example of what you
are capable of.

GROWTH VS STATISTICS
Number of people registered:-->statistics image

WE ARE COMMUNITY FIRST

Our Goal is to help our community members get a developer job.
So far, more than 5 000 campers have gotten their first developer job.

That's how we judge our success, not by the number of people who use FreeCodeCamp to
learn(programming)
although it's also good for many people like adolescents or high school/university
students but our
primary audience is working-age adults, most of whom have already finished
university,and owant to transition
from their current career into software development.

WE EXIST TO SERVE CAMPERS

We're a donor-supported nonprofit i.e.
We exist to serve those campers, that's the reason why FreeCodeCamp is Here.

Our success is directly tied to the success of campers i.e.

Our Opensource community is here to help those people get good jobs and
if we failed that, then we need to re-evaluate

WE ARE AN IDEALISTIC ORGANIZATION

So we're an idealistic organization i.e.

We feel very strongly about people being able to go out and donate money
to our non-profit and then have us turn around and use that money to help
even more people learn to code.

And we also feel very strongly about anyone being able to use our curriculum
completely free and that is completely self-paced and ideally that everything
happens right in the browser so you can use FreeCodeCamp from any device.
That said,You can use FreeCodeCamp from any
device(Laptop,PC,Smartphone, public computer in a cybercafe or a library)

FREECODECAMP'S FUTURE PLANS

-A lot more coding challenges
-A lot more educational articles(Medium.com) and videos(Youtube.com)
-More tools for schools,Universities and study groups to be able to use
FreeCodeCamp in the classroom setting.

BUT WE'RE JUST ONE OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY

There are a lot of great open source communities and they are making
a substantial difference in the world...They are making the world a
better place.
Our hopes are some of these lessons can be applied more generally by other
communities.

EXAMPLES OF OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITIES

-WIKIPEDIA is providing free knowledge
-WORDPRESS is providing free blogging
-DISCOURSE is providing free forum tools
-WIKITRIBUNE is providing a free,donor-funded newspaper

OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITIES ARE A POWERFUL FORCE FOR CHANGE

FreeCodeCamp is helping address the shortage of trained software developers.
Open source is at our core.

ADVICE FOR OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITIES

*The community leader should be as involved as possible. i.e.
1-Not delegating a task unless necessary
2-Being visible within the comunity(on social media, in person, at events)
3-Always being in "Leader mode"
*Err on the side of inclusion i.e
Everybody has some background and some skill set that they've developed
prior to coming to your comunity, you can figure out what that is and how
to leverage it and put them productively at work so they can feel they are a
valuable part of your community.
1-If someone wants to help, find a way that's right for them
2-Balance the need for quality control against the need for community involvment
3-Have a firm Code of Conduct

MY CHALLENGE TO YOU
Find a problem that you know well, and try using an open source community
to solve that problem.
