APPLIED MATHEMATICS 1A (MATH132)

ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS 10 (28 APRIL – 2 MAY 2025)

1. Three forces act on the plate. Determine the sum of the

moments of the three forces about point O.
(Ans: 2.46 kN.m clockwise)

2. In order to pull out the nail at B, the force F exerted on the handle
of the hammer must produce a clockwise moment of 500 N.cm about
point A. Determine the required magnitude of force F. (Dimensions in
the diagram are in centimetres.) (Ans: 27.6 N)

3. The boom-cable system is used to move the load of weight W.

The cable maintains a tension force of magnitude T = 28.3 kN.
Find the mass (measured in ton : 1 ton = 1000 kg) of the load if
the combined moment about point B is zero. (Ans: 2.55 )

4. The force F acts on the gripper of the robot arm. The

moment of F about point A is 210 N.m counterclockwise,
and the moment about point B is 90 N.m counterclock-
wise. Determine the magnitude of F and the angle θ.
(Ans: F = 206.31 N, θ = 44.04◦ )
5. The gantry crane shown in yellow is typically found at
a shipping port and is utilised for moving cargo containers
around before being loaded on and after being loaded off
ships. Calculate the magnitude of the tension T in the
steel cable from A to B if the magnitude of its moment
about O is 310.03 kN.m. Point B is located at the centre
on the top of the container. (Ans: 14.00 kN)

6. Consider the force system shown where F3 = −200i +

500j−300k N. Find the direction angles θx , θy , and θz that
the resultant moment (measured about point O) makes
with the positive coordinate axes.
(Ans: θx = 128.32◦ , θy = 76.55◦ , θz = 41.47◦ )

7. The system of three cables and the vertical force

F connect at point A in the diagram. The tension
in cable AB is 700 N. Determine the cable tensions
TAC and TAD if the sum of the moments due to the
forces at A (about point O) is zero.
(Ans: TAC = 130 N, TAD = 510 N)

8. The 80 N force is applied to the open end of the pipe

configuration. Calculate the magnitude of its moment
about A. (Ans: 18.16 N.m)
