What is a database ?
Structured collection of information
Consists of basic units called records or entries
Each record consists of fields, which hold pre-
defined data related to the record.
Example: Protein database

Original data submitted by experimentalists
Content controlled by submitter
Examples: GeneBank, SRA, SNP, GEO, PDB etc.
• Derivative databases
Derived from Primary data
Content controlled by third party (EBI or NCBI)
Examples: NCBI Protein, RefSeq, GEO datasets,
UniGene, Structure
